iPhone vs @SamsungUK Galaxy S10+ Vs @HuaweiMobileUK Mate 20 Pro Vs @GoogleUK Pixel Vs @HTC_UK One Plus 6T – which camera wins?

One question we always get here at how to kill an hour is ‘Which phone has the best camera’….So we hooked up with our mate and camera don Gadgetsboy armed with an iPhone Xs, Samsung S10+, Huawei Mate 20 Pro, Google Pixel 3XL and HTC One Plus 6T and did some tests to find out.

Yet, in this post we will just be focusing on the performance of their cameras.

Best Mobile Camera: Tests

Firstly in discovering the best mobile camera.

So, we looked at how the phone’s perform as soon as you open the camera and just take a photo. While all the camera’s have done well. But GadgetsBoy felt that the One Plus 6T had a little bit washed out colours.

While towards the back the photos of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro were a bit washed out.

Portrait

Secondly, Portrait Mode, the S10+ used the wide angle lens to take a portrait mode which Gadgets Boy felt that made the image suffer a bit. As the bottom of the picture was in focus when it shouldn’t have been. While, portrait mode works really well but for S10+ users the subject would need to be closer than usual.

Yet he felt that the Google Pixel 3XL did very very well here. While the edge detection was perfect. Furthermore another phone which did very well was the One Plus 6T, everything was how it should be in GadgetBoy’s opinion!

Rear Camera: Portrait

GadgetsBoy thought that the iPhone did very well out of pocket, but it struggled a bit when zoomed in. It struggled to tell the difference between his hair and the tree.

While, Huawei Mate 20 Pro performed very well and gave some very true to life colours. Yet, if you want to get a bit nit picky with it it did struggle on his ears to his coat, but other than that it did very well!

But he wasn’t too impressed with One Plus 6T’s performance as it came out very flat. However Google Pixel 3XL nailed the colours and was very punchy, therefore making it very true to life.

Selfie Mode: Portrait

Thirdly, iPhone Xs did very well out of pocket. As it looks great and true to life, there wasn’t any beautifying. Furthermore he even felt that the selfie mode did better than the back camera portrait mode.

While, GadgetsBoy wasn’t impressed with the One Plus 6T as it was very out of focus and furthermore it had some beautifying done to it.

The favourite in this test was the Google Pixel 3 XL. As it had very punchy colours and the detail in the photo was sublime!

Colour Range

Additionally we looked at the colour range, the Mate 20 Pro had some great colours and colour accuracy, but some of the image was out of focus.

While One Plus 6T however had some washed out colours. Yet the iPhone Xs GadgetsBoy felt it did very well and was closer to real world accuracy.

Furthermore the Google Pixel 3XL was too warm and punchy. Also the S10+ did most accurate and separated colour very very well. Consequently becoming his favourite in this test.

Macro

So, in the Macro test there was a tad bit of blurring which was too strong on the iPhone Xs. Yet, the Mate 20 Pro had some great contrast to it.

While One Plus 6T was a surprise in this test again as it performed well. As the photo had a sharp result.

Furthermore, again Google Pixel 3XL performed sublimely. As it was very sharp. Furthermore it even highlighted some water droplets on the petals, in focus too! But, the S10+ also performed on par in creating incredible imagery here.

Wide Angle

In this test we looked at what the newer phones are adding into their arsenal and adding an ultra wide lens.

So, Samsung S10+ did really really well getting the whole of the building in shot. When compared to the iPhone Xs (which is used as a benchmark for regular cameras here), you can really see how wide this lens can get.

The Google Pixel 3XL is ‘hacked’ as we used the Pano effect upwards as well as across.

However, with this test there is a bit of Fish Eye lens effect to it, albeit very small. While, the Mate 20 Pro had less Fish Eye lens distortion effect to it than the S10+ though. Yet, the Samsung Galaxy S10+ got more of the building in shot.

Low Light

Furthermore, the low light performance was tested here to see how well the phones performed in a dark setting.

Firstly, he felt that the iPhone Xs did the least as there was a ton of noise and loss of detail. But, similarly the Mate 20 Pro, white balance was very off. While the phone over compensated for a lot and missed the mark.

Also, the One Plus 6T had trouble with the white balance and was very warm and therefore had no detail.

While the phone that performed to the highest standard is the Google Pixel 3 XL. Giving a ton of detail in what was an almost dark scenario. Which we were impressed with.

So which one? Best Mobile Camera: In Conclusion

In conclusion to our testing we felt that the Google Pixel 3 XL was the best mobile camera. While it may have been out performed in a couple of tests, we felt that it’s capabilities overall warranted the crown here. As we loved how crisp it looked most of the time. While it performed amazingly throughout. Furthermore it never performed the least out of any of the tests.
