Facebook Getting Closer To Launching “Video”

Facebook are apparently close to launching their own shows very soon. According to Bloomberg, Facebook’s new Video section is dues to go live in mid-August. Facebook have reportedly been asking partners to turn in their first episodes of projects, however some are taking a bit longer than expected and this may cause even further delays (it was supposed to go live in June)

Facebook haven’t confirmed the launch themselves yet, but it hasn’t been keeping this project a secret. In 2016 they hired College Humor co-founder Ricky Van Veen who admitted that Facebook were looking at original scripted/unscripted content. As well as teaming up with media companies to produce inexpensive productions such as YouTube videos and big budget productions to compete with HBO, Netflix and the likes.

Facebook Death Sentence?

A man in Pakistan has been sentenced to death after apparently posting ‘blasphemous content’ about the Prophet Muhammad, his wife and companions to Facebook reports the BBC.

The public prosecutor for the case thinks that this is the first related to social media, Facebook are yet to comment on the ruling and the defence lawyer for the convicted man says that his client became embroiled in an argument about Islam on Facebook with whom he thought was a stranger but in fact was a counter-terrorism official.

Amnesty International have criticized the blasphemy laws in Pakistan stating that the laws “enable abuse and violate the country’s international legal obligations to respect and protect a range of human rights, including freedom of religion or belief and of opinion and expression.

It is so severe that once a person is charged they can be denied bail and face a long and unfair trial, access to Facebook itself was blocked 7 years ago after a contest to draw images of the Prohphet Muhammad was across Facebook.

Facebook Shut Down Their Own AI After It Creates Own Language

Facebook shut down their AI programs after it appeared to create it’s own language that only they could understand. The chatbots created their own changes to English which made it easier for them to understand but was absolute rubbish to humans.

The task they set their chat bots were to trade items with one another, each item being given a numerical value, however it soon became apparent that only the bots understood what they each meant, after being told not to use comprehensive English, they (the chatbots) created a form of shorthand, after being instructed to work out how to negotiate and improve bartering.

The negotiations look weird:

Bob: i can i i everything else . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Alice: balls have zero to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to

Bob: you i everything else . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Alice: balls have a ball to me to me to me to me to me to me to me

Bob: i i can i i i everything else . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Alice: balls have a ball to me to me to me to me to me to me to me

Bob: i . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Alice: balls have zero to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to

Bob: you i i i i i everything else . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Alice: balls have 0 to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to

Bob: you i i i everything else . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Alice: balls have zero to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to

As you can see there seems to be some rules, the chatbots stress their own name as a way of negotiating and it’s not a glitch, with some items being traded successfully. With Facebook’s Artificial Intelligence Research divisions visiting researcher Dhruv Vatra saying that “If I said ‘the’ five times, you’d interpret that to mean I want five copies of this item. This isn’t so different to the way communities of humans create shorthands”

Researcher Mike Lewis told FastCo that they shut down the ChatBots because they wanted to have bots that could talk to humans, not because they were afraid of SkyNet coming to life in front of them.

Facebook Stories unlocks public sharing

Facebook has now added the ability to post stories…

…and make them public, meaning you do not have to be friends on facebook to be able to watch a person’s Facebook story.

It’s essentially a clone of snapchat and instagram stories but results have shown that there’s more interaction on people viewing your story rather than interacting with a post you have posted on your page.

Facebook has proudly shared the rapid traction of Instagram Stories, both of which have over 250 million daily users. That makes them bigger than Snapchat, which has 166 million daily users for its whole app.

Facebook now offers help to find free WiFi for you wherever you are

Facebook is launching a new feature to help find free WiFi worldwide

Facebook has been in the testing phase for this new feature for the past 12 months, rolling it out only in certain countries on Apple devices to see how well it worked, but now they have confirmed that this feature will be available on both iOS and Android platforms.

This is a dream come true for those on low data packages or for the individuals who often find themselves without network.

To access this function you need to go to the ‘More’ tab in the mobile app and then click on ‘Find WiFi’.

Businesses in the area will need to opt in to make their WiFi available to the public through Facebook, but Facebook still dominates social media in terms of monthly users so it could be beneficial for the businesses who choose to opt in and provide this service.

Facebook Broken

Is Facebook Broken?

Is Facebook learning what you like and manipulating the posts you see?

Have you noticed that you are only shown a handful of your friends post on Facebook? Well that is because Facebook learns what you like and actually influences you to connect closer with certain people. Say for example, you ‘like’ a post or picture of pizza, if you ‘like’ several pictures of pizza it is more than likely that your Facebook feed will start to show you more pictures of pizza. Or the more you engage with posts from a particular user, the more often their posts are shown to you.

Facebook creates a small ‘in-group’ cluster of Facebook friends and topics that dominate your feed, as you grow accustomed to interacting with them, this changes your behaviour, leading you to interacting with them all the more. This then reinforces their ‘in-group’ status and basically isolates you from the rest of your Facebook friends.. or the ‘out-group’.

Strange huh!

Facebook Instagram Notifications

Facebook and Facebook Messenger have a special button which allows users to switch between the two apps. The social networking platform is trialling a new feature. This will allow users to switch quickly between not only those to apps but also Instagram.

The feature is basically an extension, in the top right corner of the Messenger app. The trial will display a pop-up menu with all unread notifications across the three platforms.
