Counter-Strike Tournaments and Fixed Matches?

A total of 6 Australians have been arrested in connection with Counter-Strike Tournaments and match fixing.

The investigation began into CS:GO match fixing in March. After a betting agency tipped off the police of some suspicious activity. The Victoria Police released a statement:

“It’s alleged that players were arranging to throw matches and subsequently placing bets on those matches,” Victoria Police

A total of 4 men have been arrested and a total of 5 matches were affected. An additional warrant was executed by Western Australia police in Perth, however no arrests were made. While 2 more arrests were made in Mount Eliza.

“Esports is really an emerging sporting industry and with that will come the demand for betting availability on the outcomes of tournaments and matches.

These warrants also highlight that police will take any reports of suspicious or criminal activity within esports seriously, and we encourage anyone with information to come forward.”

Neil Paterson. Assistant commissioner of Victoria Police

All of the men that were arrested have been “released pending further inquiries”

Continuing the investigation are detectives from the Organised Crime Intelligence Unit alongside the Sporting Integrity Intelligence Unit. In an effort to prevent this from happening again, Sportsbet and other betting outlets are helping too.
