Science(ish)

We recently had Rick Edwards on the show and had a wonderful time chatting to him about all things science, Fatbergs and hunting for treasure in rivers. Most notably we discussed his Science podcast that he presents alongside Dr Michael Brooks: Science(ish). Science(ish) is all about discussing the science in popular culture.

What are the episodes about?

In the podcast that we had with Rick we discussed recent Science(ish) shows such as discussing what would happen if there were Nuclear Warfare. Dr Michael Brooks’ revelation that the best way to figure out humanity. It would be to place loads of babies on a desert island and do experiments on them. How plants defend themselves against caterpillars. Plus Rick informed us about a special that was once shelved, it was due to be released on Valentines Day. To find out exactly what the special was, listen to Rick’s show with us! Furthermore Marcus found out during his chat with Rick that they’re doing an episode on Wolverine soon! In this EP, Rick discusses with Dr Michael Brooks about regeneration, much like Wolverine! Also we touched on genetic mutation and how people may be able to mutate gene’s in the future to design their children!

Science

We had a great time chatting to Rick about his podcast Science(ish) and book of the same name. It is very apparent that Rick is very passionate about Science. Yet, the things he spoke about whilst with us, were made very simple for us to understand. This is what Science(ish) is all about, talking about Science in a cool, entertaining and interesting way. So, therefore, even if you’re not a fan of Science, you may have had some Science discussions with your mates without even knowing about it as Rick stated in the podcast!

Science is not as dull as many Tv shows and text books may lead you to believe. While Science(ish) is the cool cousin of that. You will want to delve into things with your friends about many of the subjects that Edwards and Brooks discuss on Science(ish). Therefore we feel that it will open your eyes to the things! Such as how exciting and exhilarating Science can be, more specifically the future of the world.

Science(ish) is a very cool podcast and we highly recommend that you check out Rick’s podcast, you can listen to Science(ish) by clicking here!

Hollywood remakes: No new ideas?

We love movies here at How To Kill An Hour, we love enjoying them, we enjoy debating about them, we like to discuss what would make a good movie. But are we running out of original ideas? Hollywood remakes seem to happen each year and MusicMagpie took a deep dive into the history of cinema.

How many of the films that we have seen are remakes? How many of the films that you thought were originals but in fact were remakes. Which begs the question, is Hollywood becoming lazier and looking for a quick bit of cash? Is coming up with new and original ideas that difficult?

They investigated this and analysed over 100 years of movie remakes. Consequently this is a total of 1,438 films. Dating all the way back to 1902, they wanted to find out if Hollywood really are leaning on the remake market.

Factors

The factors that they researched are:

  • Which movie has been remade the most?
  • What other movies have been remade multiple times
  • How long we are waiting before remaking movies

Their analysis discovered that an average time between the original release of a film and a remake is 23 years. Whilst subsequent remakes having a shorter and shorter time frame between releases.

The longest time between remakes was 85 years. It’s a film called The Cabinet of Dr.Caligari, the original released in 1920 and the remake in 2005. Dumbo was released in 2941 and a remake is due this year in 2019. Therefore marking a 78 year gap between releases.

Are remakes better? Find out the extensive list and rather interesting piece from MusicMagpie here. It’s an interesting read, some movies have been remade a total of 5 times! Such as Robin Hood, Oliver Twist, Jane Eyre and Brewster’s Millions.

EuropaCorp

Netflix purchasing Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp?

Luc Besson he released a visually impressive film called Valerian last year. Releasing through his own film company, EuropaCorp. It is being touted as one of the most expensive independent movies ever made. However, on release the movie wasn’t well received by critics. Valerian didn’t show the same promise that the money that got put into it. As a result, according to Variety, EuropaCorps prospects of staying alive are dwindling.

Netflix, EuropaCorp Saviour?

However, there could be a lifeline in from Netflix. EuropaCorp are said to be in “advanced talks” according to reports gathered by Slash Film. Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp is one of Europe’s largest indie film studios. Founded in 1996 and has spawned many famous films. The thriller Taken is a EuropaCorp production, a favourite of many! The Sci-Fi film Lucy was well received by critics too, hitting 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. So EuropaCorp are no slouch when it comes to movies. However, the company is said to have taken on significant debt. Therefore have been downsizing American operations to return to French language films.

According to Slash Films reports the talks between the streaming giant and EuropaCorp began in January. With the intention of a multi picture deal being considered. However, Netflix are now said to be wanting the whole company and want a total acquisition of EuropaCorp. If the acquisition were to go ahead, Besson, would remain with the company as the central creative entity.

So, Netflix is serious about making movies. We may see Netflix either in the cinema. Taking on the cinema from people’s homes. Or both!

If this aquistion were to happen as scheduled in the summer. We’re very interested to see what Netflix can do with a movie studio under it’s wing. Netflix Originals have done very well on the platform and if they can replicate that success with films. That would be a very bold move from Netflix to Hollywood indeed.

UK’s HUGE Theme Park

The UK’s HUGE theme park which is £3.2 Billion development for a brownfield site on the Swanscombe Peninsula in Kent, what’s currently an unused cement works will be transformed into a HUGE 872 acre park. That includes cinemas, restaurants, theatres, rollercoasters (of course) 3,500 hotel rooms, a development of the UK’s largest indoor water park and 14,000 parking spaces.

Tickets are estimated at a reasonable £57 and transport packages will be available as it’s next to Ebbsfleet international, which is 20mins away from St Pancras in London. London Resort Companies Holdings are behind the project and they were in partnership with Paramount, but now the deal is off the table but the development is still there to build rides based on Hollywood film franchises.

Building work (if the government approves plans which take 12-18months to approve) is planned to be undertook between 2019-2022 with doors opening in 2023.

Netflix Movie Studio!?

Netflix has been producing original content at a steady pace, both in the movie space and in the tv space. Whilst receiving praise from audiences and critics alike, prestige has eluded them. Deadline are reporting, in a power move to attract bigger names to the service, they have hired Scott Stuber, a HUGE hollywood movie producer.(Ted 2, Patriots Day, Kill The Messenger)

Netflix wants to be a movie studio and is going the right way about it. However, Bloomberg reports that Netflix has an uphill battle as many filmmakers develop their projects for the big screen and Netflix’s business plan of same day theatre/streaming release doesn’t sit well with theatres.

Can Netflix repeat its TV success on the big screen? We will have to wait and see.

apple tv to rival netflix

Apple wages war on Netflix streaming service

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Apple Music service are planning to add original video content to their service to help gain more subscribers.

This has been rumoured for a long time. It seems that Apple is now starting to reach out to Hollywood producers and are planning to add original content by the end of this year.

Apple are apparently trying to create some hard hitting original content like Westworld and Stranger Things.  There will be original movies potentially appearing later on down the line if the Tv Shows are a success.

There’s no news as to what type of shows that the big fruit seem to be planning due to how tight lipped they are with things usually.  This is kind of a surprise but kind of isn’t. Apple recently released a documentary. It was called 808: The Movie and narrated by Zane Lowe. So there were some signs! Apple acquired the rights to broadcast their own 30 minute series of James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke. Also the company are planning a semi-autobiographical documentary series. One called ‘Vital Signs’ starring Dr Dre which is due out on Apple Music this year.

So this new venture see’s Apple’s first step outside of music related video content. How will they do?

Real Life Super Mario World

An announcement has dropped that will give everyone who likes games a real excitement of what is to come from Universal Studios. There is going to be a “Super Nintendo World” – Yes you read that right, a “Super Nintendo World”

The featured image is some concept art of what the final design will look like when the park opens in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. The press release states that the park will be:

“expansive and multilevel environments filled with unprecedented, state-of-the-art rides, interactive areas, shops and restaurants, all featuring Nintendo’s most popular characters and games.”

While it looks like you can walk around in a real Super Mario World, sorry, hop skip and jump, Nintendo’s very own Shigeru Miyamoto is apparently working with Universal to make the characters as accurate as possible.

Super Nintendo World is also set to drop in Universal Studios, Orlando and Hollywood.
