Nintendo Switch Lite

4th September 2019/in Entertainment /by billywright

So, Nintendo are re-releasing the Nintendo Switch. However, this time, it’s smaller, lighter and more of a handheld than ever before. It’s called Nintendo Switch Lite.

How? Well, the Switch Lite is designed for handheld play, making it easier to play games when you are out and about.

The difference between the Lite and the bigger Switch is that the controllers are built into the controller. While this may be a disappointment to some, for others it makes it a lot easier to play. Not only because it has a control pad on the left hand side instead of buttons.

HD Rumble has been removed, as has the IR sensor and the screen has been reduced from 6.2 inches to 5.5inches.

Games such as 1,2 Switch and Mario party won’t work with the Nintendo Switch Lite because of the non detachable joy-cons. Plus games that are work in handheld mode are the only games that work.

Much like the larger Switch you can play up to 8 Nintendo Switch and Lite systems together to play multiplayer games and you can also play online using the Lite with a Nintendo Online membership.

The Lite comes in Grey, Turquoise and yellow and you can pre-order a Switch Lite here!

Dreamcast

Dreamcast Portable

28th August 2019/in Entertainment /by billywright

YouTuber GmanModz has created a fully functional Sega Dreamcast which has been shrunk for handheld use. Which is about the size of the Nintendo 2DS.

Hardware engineers focus on performance and longevity when creating traditional sized consoles. So Hardware Hackers find consoles such as the Nintendo Wii and hack them so they can be miniaturized. Simply by trimming away parts of the systems motherboard which aren’t 100% necessary. Which is why this playable Wii in an Altoids is possible and the above Sega Dreamcast can also be shrinkable.

GmanModz has been able to fit everything in a Dreamcast, including a power management chip, which was originally designed for portable Wii systems. There’s also a second display as well. It’s a tiny OLED meant to emulate the Dreamcast Visual Memory Unit cartridge which was plugged into the controllers. While that feature doesn’t work yet, the rest of the console works well and can run for 2hrs on a rechargeable battery.

Pure StreamR

What's in the box? Pure StreamR

The Pure StreamR carries a bit of weight behind it and for good reason. The sound on this little device is very very impressive! It has a HUGE kick in the bass and we love that!

We love our music here at How To Kill An Hour, so we’re always on the lookout for fantastic pieces of kit. One of which is portable speakers. We’re huge fans of Pure, so when we saw the Pure StreamR it was a speaker we just had to check out.

Upon taking it out of the box, we discovered it is a very small device. But it is hefty. It carries a bit of weight behind it and for good reason. The sound on this little device is very very impressive! It has a HUGE kick in the bass and we love that! It’s the perfect speaker to take out and about with you.

It’s portable so has Bluetooth streaming on it, so you can play all of your favourite music from Apple Music or Spotify. Furthermore, why not play your favorite podcasts while on the go? *cough cough*

Not only that the Pure StreamR has digital DAB radio built in as well as Alexa voice technology! Furthermore the speaker is 360 degrees, so wherever you’re sitting you will enjoy powerful, crystal clear sound. The StreamR is one of the few bluetooth speakers to offer Alexa too. The onboard microphone connects to the Pure Home App on your smartphone via bluetooth. Then it will connect to Alexa using Wifi or mobile data. Therefore allowing you to have access to Alexa, wherever you are! Ask her for the weather, your schedule or even play a playlist.

With the Pure Home App you can also customise your speaker settings and be notified of software updates. So you’ll never miss a beat!

Pure have also added an aux-in cable, so for those not wanting to use bluetooth, this is the speaker for you! The Aux cable also acts as an antenna for the digital radio! How cool is that?!

The sound fills the room and sounds just as good outdoors and with a 15 hour battery life, you simply cannot go wrong.

Nintendo Switch

2nd November 2016/in Entertainment, Games /by billywright

So Nintendo have announced their next console and boy is it a game changer!

It’s kind of a home console, portable handheld console in one, what was teased a several months ago via patents has finally come to fruition and safe to say us here at How To Kill An Hour are definitely interested!

While you are at home on Nintendo’s newest console, Nintendo Switch, rests in the the dock which connects the system to a tv which of course acts like a regular console. But then simply by lifting the console out from the dock the system automatically will switch to what Nintendo are calling ‘Portable Mode’ and you’ll be having the same experience that you had on the big screen but now on the go, all in glorious HD.

You play via the detachable ‘Joy-Con’ controllers that sit either side of the Nintendo Switch console. There are a multiple ways that a user can hold and use the Joy-Con controller, for example, one player can use a Joy-Con controller in each of their hands, two players can have one each or multiple controllers can be connected to the console by numerous of people so there are plenty of ways to play games with Nintendo’s newest console. The multiplayer options don’t stop their either as it is possible for numerous people to bring their own Nintendo Switch’s together to play local multiplayer with one another!

The controller is always interesting with Nintendo and this one is no different (as you can see via the image above) the controllers can be clicked back into place on the console, or if you prefer, be slipped into a Joy Con Grip accessory. The Joy-Con’s can also connected to an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller (a more traditional controller)

They can easily click back into place or be slipped into a Joy-Con Grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, if preferred, the gamer can select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to use instead of the Joy-Con controllers. Furthermore, it is possible for numerous people to bring their Nintendo Switch systems together to enjoy local multiplayer face-to-face competition.
