Facebook to Hire Live Stream Monitors

23rd May 2017/in Gadgets / Tech, Technology/by mollybpz

Facebook is hiring 3,000 more people to review videos after several murders were live-streamed.

The social networking site was criticised for not responding quick enough. Some videos for example, where up on the platform for 24 hours before being removed.

“CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company is ‘working to make these videos easier to report so we can take the right action sooner – whether that’s responding quickly when someone needs help or taking a post down.’”

Facebook Originals?

10th May 2017/in Entertainment, Film /TV/by billywright

Facebook Videos are going to become more than hosts for “OMG I can’t believe he said this” Or  videos with audio that is  NSFW (hate those….).

Facebook are preparing to launch into the world of original programming, according to Business Insider they are planning 24 original shows in June via the company’s new ‘Video’ Tab.

They aren’t playing around either, napping College Humour Co-Founder Ricky Van Veed to lead their efforts and hiring a former MTV exec in Mina Lefevre to take over creating original content which is both scripted/non-scripted. Business Insider report that Facebook are apparently planning to take on both premium content and low budget in the vein of House of Cards and High End YouTube videos.

HOW TO: Spot Fake News (Via Facebook)

6th May 2017/in Entertainment, Lifestyle/by billywright

Facebook have detailed their top 10 tips to Spot Fake News:

  1. Be skeptical of headlines. False news stories often have catchy headlines in all caps with exclamation points. If shocking claims in the headline sound unbelievable, they probably are.
  2. Look closely at the URL. A phony or look-alike URL may be a warning sign of false news. Many false news sites mimic authentic news sources by making small changes to the URL. You can go to the site to compare the URL to established sources.
  3. Investigate the source. Ensure that the story is written by a source that you trust with a reputation for accuracy. If the story comes from an unfamiliar organization, check their “About” section to learn more.
  4. Watch for unusual formatting. Many false news sites have misspellings or awkward layouts. Read carefully if you see these signs.
  5. Consider the photos. False news stories often contain manipulated images or videos. Sometimes the photo may be authentic, but taken out of context. You can search for the photo or image to verify where it came from.
  6. Inspect the dates. False news stories may contain timelines that make no sense, or event dates that have been altered.
  7. Check the evidence. Check the author’s sources to confirm that they are accurate. Lack of evidence or reliance on unnamed experts may indicate a false news story.
  8. Look at other reports. If no other news source is reporting the same story, it may indicate that the story is false. If the story is reported by multiple sources you trust, it’s more likely to be true.
  9. Is the story a joke? Sometimes false news stories can be hard to distinguish from humor or satire. Check whether the source is known for parody, and whether the story’s details and tone suggest it may be just for fun.
  10. Some stories are intentionally false. Think critically about the stories you read, and only share news that you know to be credible.

Facebook wants to read your mind!

4th May 2017/in Gadgets, Gadgets / Tech/by billywright

F8, Facebook’s annual developer conference, they unveiled a proposal of “Brain to Computer” Interface – that would allow us to send thoughts to a computer.

Regina Dugan, Head of Facebooks secret hardware R&D division “Building 8” asked “what if you could type directly from your brain” – As she showed a video of a woman typing 8 words per minute from her brain.

“That’s five times faster than you can type on your smartphone, and it’s straight from your brain…..Your brain activity contains more information than what a word sounds like and how it’s spelled; it also contains semantic information of what those words mean.”

Facebook is proposing a world where we’re connected all the time by thought alone.

Similarly Dugan also highlighted a video that showed the ability to listen to human speech through vibrations on skin. Aiding disabled people to hear, it works like braille, that you feel with your body rather than fingers via the use of actuators and sensors via an armband.

The end goal is to build an online world that feels real:

“Our brains produce enough data to stream 4 HD movies every second. The problem is that the best way we have to get information out into the world — speech — can only transmit about the same amount of data as a 1980s modem…..We’re working on a system that will let you type straight from your brain about 5x faster than you can type on your phone today. Eventually, we want to turn it into a wearable technology that can be manufactured at scale. Even a simple yes/no ‘brain click’ would help make things like augmented reality feel much more natural.” – Mark Zuckerberg said via Facebook post.

1st May 2017/in Gadgets / Tech, Lifestyle/by billywright

Google is taking a lot of time to tackle fake news and one of the ways that they are going to be undertaking this task it by teaching kids aged 13-18 years old via a series of workshops called Internet Citizens. It has been designed by experts from the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, UK Youth and Livity, whilst Google has an advisory council which includes Metropilitan Police and thinktank Demos.

According to Google:

“The workshops will help young people find a positive sense of belonging online and teach skills on how to participate safely and responsibly, and use tools such as flagging and comment moderation to make the web better for all. Some of the specific topics include what could be done in response to offensive speech, fake news, echo chambers and how they could use video to bring diverse groups together.”

Facebook delivering internet

30th April 2017/in Future, Gadgets / Tech/by billywright

Internet has become a human right and something that we need – like air.

To help save lives in times of natural disasters, Facebook have designed a “Tether – Antenna” A small unmanned helicopter that hooks onto undamaged fiber and power lines (when cellular infrastructure was damaged but fiber lines in the area still work) and then hover “a few hundred feet from the ground,”  to provide internet and when complete will be able to offer internet, sometimes at up to months at a time!

The tech is still early in terms of development but, like the company’s plans for blanketing the developing world with a limited form of internet connectivity alongside Terragraph, (a gigabit wifi system that bolsters signals in dense urban environments) and Aquila, (Facebooks internet delivering drones) – it highlights that Facebook want to do a lot more than just put augmented masks on your face.
