How many people will you kill?

24th March 2020/in Gadgets / Tech/by billywright

We’re all on lockdown at the moment here in the UK. Following in the footsteps of Italy, Spain and France. Though it may seem like it’s nothing to go out and live life as you normally would. You could be putting a silly amount of people at risk. So website How many people will you kill, helps to shock you into behaving correctly.

The site does some mathematical magic to work out how many people you will kill by going out. Potentially infecting people. Remember you may be infected and not even know it!

You put in your location, how many people will be there and an average age. It will give you a run down of how many people you’ll infect. Furthermore it will tell you of those infected how many people you will kill.

How Many People Will You Kill?

(The below information has been copied/pasted, we need it to be 100% accurate)

The calculator pulls in the latest figures for confirmed cases for each country and region. Due to limited testing, asymptomatic cases and a lag between contracting the virus and test results, the true numbers of infected people are much higher. This is evident when looking at the number of diagnosed cases vs true cases in the early stages of the spread in Hubei:

The proportion of undetected cases is estimated by comparing the measured fatality rate with the fatality rate in countries with the best testing, for instance South Korea. Higher fatality rates in a country are assumed to imply limited testing and hence more hidden cases.

The data from South Korea also depicts considerable variation in the number of confirmed cases across different age groups. Party-goers in their 20s are more likely to contract the virus than typically less sociable older people. This distribution is hidden in countries such as Italy, where only those with the most severe symptoms are tested:

Combining the recent infections data with the hidden case and age factors gives a probability that each of your attendees is infected.

Number of immediate infections

COVID-19 has proven to be very infectious, so it’s assumed that for small gatherings if anyone in your group has the virus, they’ll infect everyone else.

Crucially this means the expected number of direct infections scales as the square of the number of attendees. If you’re really set on holding an event, best not allow +1s as that’ll make the impact 4 times worse.

Long-term impact of these infections

Exponential growth means a small number of infections can quickly explode to a vast number, as has been seen around the world. For the countries still battling with the epidemic, we assume the worst (but very possible) scenario, that they fail to control the spread, and eventually 60% of the population become infected. For the countries who have demonstrated they can contain the disease. The number of possible final infections has been capped to a much smaller proportion of their population.

Your event is responsible for the infections it causes instantly as a fraction of all the infections at that time. Multiplied by the final number of infections. The expected deaths are estimated to be 1% of this figure.

There’s an argument that, in this worst-case scenario, the deaths would have happened anyway, with or without your event, you just make them happen sooner. In which case you’d need to calculate the extra pressure on the health care system, due to the larger and more sudden peak in infections. This approach would also work for considering the non-worst-case scenarios, where the disease is eradicated before it infects most of the population. This refinement can be added when the effectiveness of the European lockdowns becomes apparent.

How to Step Things Up in 2020

28th December 2019/in Lifestyle/by marcusbronzy

It’s always possible to upgrade your life, but there’s no denying that a new year does provide an especially excellent opportunity to mix things up. And when it comes to 2020, we’re not just entering a new year, oh no: this an entirely new decade. The last decade has gone, whether it was good or bad, and all our energies should be focused on making the new roaring twenties extra special. But how can you do this? We take a look at a few ideas below — incorporate them into your life, and you’ll be on your way to a great year/decade.

New Careers

Have you hit something of a rut when it comes to your career? It does happen from time to time! Even if we’re in something that we like, it can begin to feel a little tired and old if we stay for too long in the same position without progressing. So while you might have been vaguely aware that things have to change a little, the new year will provide the opportunity to actually do it. It might involve topping up your education, applying to new jobs, or selecting a new career altogether.

Upgraded Home

The new year can also provide an opportunity to look at your living arrangements, and figure out if it’s really all that it could be. Of course, how you upgrade will depend on where you’re currently living. If you’ve not long left university and you’re still living like a student, then this might involve putting together a more adult space. Or it might involve moving out on your own if you’re still living with housemates. They can be super enjoyable to be around, but at some point, we all have to fly the safety of the nest and live on our own.

Getting Around

There are many things that can make us feel like we’ve arrived in adulthood, but some are more important than others. Where we live, outside above, is one. How we get around is another. If you’re forever relying on public transportation, rides from other people, or you’re driving around in a vehicle that you’re ashamed to be seen in, then this is a clear area where you can upgrade things in 2020. If you can’t yet drive, then your mission could be to pass your test. If you’re looking for a new vehicle, then you could look at the many Vauxhall new car offers that are available. You’ll definitely feel things are moving in the right direction once you’re riding around in your new set of wheels!

New Challenges

Finally, you can look at making the forthcoming year one to remember by pushing yourself to try and experience new things. This might involve picking up a new hobby or joining a club, or taking a new kind of trip to somewhere exotic and exciting. It doesn’t matter what you do, actually, so long as you’re stepping outside of your comfort zone. It might not always be comfortable, but it will be worth it!

Google Turns Raspberry Pi Smart!

10th May 2017/in Gadgets / Tech, Technology/by billywright

Raspberry Pi is about to get really smart, they have teamed up with Google to bring voice integration to their product, with a very smart combination of hardware and software. So smart in fact this little DIY kit brings all the fancy powers that the Google Home has to the Raspberry Pi 3.

However…..the pack contains a Voice HAT (Hardware Accessory on Top, a HAT is any piece of physical hardware that is added to the Pi motherboard) board with a speaker and a microphone, giving Pi owners everything they need to add-in voice integration.

The only way to get the HAT board is to buy the latest issue of the company’s official magazine The MagPi, where it comes as a freebie.

WHAT IS A RASPBERRY PI?

A Raspberry Pi is a credit card-sized computer originally designed for education, inspired by the 1981 BBC Micro. … The Raspberry Pi is slower than a modern laptop or desktop but is still a complete Linux computer and can provide all the expected abilities that implies, at a low-power consumption level. https://opensource.com/resources/what-raspberry-pi

3D home in 24 hours?

27th March 2017/in Gadgets / Tech, Technology/by billywright
A San Francisco based startup called Apis Cor have built a whole house (from scratch), with 3D printing in a Russian town in 24 hours.

They used a mobile 3D printer to print the concrete walls, partitions and all the important stuff while workers had to manually paint it and install roofing materials and things like thermal insulation which took no time at all.

It’s a 400 square foot tiny home which is around the size of a standard hotel room in comparison. According to Apis Cor the whole house cost $10,134 to make with the largest cost coming from doors and windows, but the price doesn’t include the cost of the land.

If Apis Cor does choose to start 3D printing homes, potential buyers can choose whatever size and shape they want, it doesn’t have to be this small.

But then simply by lifting the console out from the dock the system automatically will switch to what Nintendo are calling ‘Portable Mode’ and you’ll be having the same experience that you had on the big screen but now on the go, all in glorious HD.

You play via the detachable ‘Joy-Con’ controllers that sit either side of the Nintendo Switch console. The controller is always interesting with Nintendo and this one is no different (as you can see via the image above) the controllers can be clicked back into place on the console, or if you prefer, be slipped into a Joy Con Grip accessory. The Joy-Con’s can also connected to an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller (a more traditional controller)

They can easily click back into place or be slipped into a Joy-Con Grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, if preferred, the gamer can select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to use instead of the Joy-Con controllers. Furthermore, it is possible for numerous people to bring their Nintendo Switch systems together to enjoy local multiplayer face-to-face competition.
