Hey Siri, Get Me A Big Mac – Fast Food AI

11th September 2019/in Gadgets / Tech/by billywright

You will soon be able to ask an AI patron what burger you’d like at McDonalds. McDonalds have announced that they are buying the voice tech startup Apprente. Why? So they can automate their drive-thru menu. *cue old people moaning that it will cost jobs!* Fast Food AI is on the way!

The Mountain View based company specialise in buidling voice agents which can take orders in a variety of languages and accents. McDonalds have been testing the tech in a number of locations and they hope it will make for “faster, simpler and more accurate order taking” via it’s drive-thrus.

McD Tech Labs

Apprente will be a part of the McD Tech Labs. Which are a new restaurant tech group. The team will become the groups founding members and co-founder Itamar Arel will serve as it’s vice-president.

“McDonald’s commitment to innovation has long inspired our team. It was quite clear from our various engagements that McDonald’s is leading the industry with technology”

“Apprente was borne out of an opportunity to use technology to solve challenging real world problems and we’re thrilled to now apply this to creating personalized experiences for customers and crew.”

Itamar Arel, Ph.D, co-founder of Apprente and Vice President of McD Tech Labs.

There is potential to expand Apprente’s tech into other areas like mobile and kiosk ordering. McDonalds purchase of Apprente is it’s third of 2019. After it acquired Dynamic Yield earlier this year in April. A personalised data startup, which customises it’s drive-thru menus by the weather, time of day, restaurant traffic and trending menu items. They also bought a minority stake in Plexure a New Zealand mobile app tech company. Fast Food AI looks incredible helpful, though at the cost of some jobs, will it create more at other areas of the company?

Apple looking to make Siri better!

4th April 2018/in Gadgets / Tech/by billywright

As we have discussed on the show previously, the most impressive AI helpers are those from Amazon and Google. With Alexa and Google Assistant respectively. However, if you may recall that it was Apple who first introduced us to an AI that can help you in your day to day lives. Siri, was the first out of the gate. Yet, she is lagging behind her rivals when it comes to intelligence. Both Alexa and Google Assisstant can recall a lot more information and specific information. Siri on the other hand, sometimes can’t even answer basic questions. Only answering what you want if you ask her something in a very specific manner. She’s just not as good as her counterparts. With the release of Homepod, the lack of intelligence in Siri is even more obvious. Yet it’s vitally important to get this correctly, now more than ever, because of Homepod’s battle with Alexa and Google Home. That’s not to say that Siri isn’t intelligent, she can answer questions, she just isn’t good enough.

Siri Hiring

So to battle this, the guys over at Thinknum have noticed that Apple have been on a Siri hiring spree. Hiring as much as 161 different positions to help improve Siri. There’s been a steady increase in Siri related job positions since the summer of 2016, however, there’s been a surge, since February of 2018. The positions are for engineers. Engineers that are geared towards helping Siri answer her weaknesses in answering simple general questions. Other positions that are available are for Siri’s Proactive Intelligence. This is basically Siri’s ability to anticipate the type of info that you may need. A further two other positions are for SiriKit developer framework and speech generation. While it may be some time before we see any improvement on a consumer level, this definitely shows Apple’s intent when it comes to AI.

Will we see whisper Siri soon?

21st December 2017/in Gadgets / Tech/by marcusbronzy

Apple have filed a patent for a “a digital assistant that is capable of detecting a whispered speech input and providing a whispered speech response.” Basically Siri that whispers back to you if you whisper to it. This may be Apple’s attempt at making it’s AI assistants to become more ‘human.’ As a result less awkward to use in public situations.

In the patent, Apple explained in which a whispering Siri will help you out when you need it the most. The situations that Apple listed where Libraries and in an office cubicle. While, Apple also noted that a whispering Siri is intended to protect a users privacy.

The way that an iPhone or Apple watch would be able to detect if a users talking quietly or whispering to it. Would be detecting the amplitude and frequency patterns of a users voice. As a result, Apple want to make Siri actually whisper back to you. Not just turn the volume down on your device. Think about it, when someone whispers something to you, you don’t speak back normally. Subconsciously you make the decision to match the other person’s voice pattern.

Just a patent

It’s also very important to note not all patents become reality.

Google Assist on iPhone

26th May 2017/in Apps, Entertainment/by mollybpz

When you compare it to Siri, Google Assist is said to be a more powerful voice assistant. It allows you to ask more complicated questions and it has third-party integrations. Also, it allows you to control your connected devices due to the company having new partnerships with third-party companies.

Also, you can now type your questions as well as speaking out loud, this can be useful when you’re out in public, or you do not want to disturb anyone around you!

Siri Speaker

7th May 2017/in Gadgets, Gadgets / Tech/by billywright

Apple could announce their own take on the Amazon Echo at this years WWDC in June according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. A Speaker with integrated Siri basically. With superior sound and computing power than that of Amazon’s Echo and Google’s Home, with an end of year release date. This isn’t the first time an analyst had predicted this, leaker Sonny Dickinson has also predicted that the Siri Speaker will make an appearance at WWDC.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise Apple want to dip their toes into this market with the improvement of HomeKit and the continued growth of Apple Music. We shall see in June. (Maybe)
