How facial recognition could replace train tickets

The end of train tickets?

Ever jumped on a train and hidden in the toilets until the train conductor has gone because you didn’t buy a ticket?

Firstly, shame on you and secondly this might be a thing of the past.

New technology is being developed which will aim to eliminate train tickets and barriers in the future.

The facial recognition system uses two near-infrared lights to help a single camera determine texture and orientation of each pixel it captures therefore being able to identify the person boarding the train.

The system, being developed by the Bristol Robotics Lab, is being partly funded by government and the private sector – their hope is that it will make the process of arriving and leaving stations faster and effortless,

The idea in theory might work but if someone has a similar facial structure to another person or is even a twin, this might make a simple time saving process into an annoying long winded one.

The Queen’s A Binge Drinker?

The Queen drinks so much apparently that she’s officially a binge drinker by government standards.

Apparently the Queen drinks a Gin and Dubonnet before Lunch, a Wine at Lunch, followed by a glass of champagne and a dry martini in the evening, equating to 6 units a day according to the Independent.

Officially, according to government guidelines, making the Queen a binge drinker. The info allegedly came from Margaret Rhodes, The Queen’s cousin.

Also as revealed by The Independent, as part of their 60 facts to celebrate The Queen’s 60th anniversary as Head of State that she likes to dance and her favourite song is Dancing Queen by ABBA and she is partial to an Ali G impression according to Prince William.

London Resort Companies Holdings are behind the project and they were in partnership with Paramount, but now the deal is off the table but the development is still there to build rides based on Hollywood film franchises.

Alcohol Memory

Apparently, according to researchers, getting mildly drunk after studying appears to make you remember stuff better than if you weren’t getting tipsy.

University of Exeter carried out this amazing experiment on 88 lucky people whom identified themselves as social drinkers. They then undertook a word learning task and told to drink as much as they liked! The next day they were tested on the word test and they suprisingly were able to remember better than those who didn’t drink!

Exeter’s Professor Celia Morgan explained: “The leading explanation is that alcohol blocks the learning of new information and therefore the brain has more resources available to lay down other recently learned information into long-term memory. The theory is that the hippocampus – the brain area really important in memory – switches to ‘consolidating’ memories, transferring from short into longer-term memory.”

In simpler terms, your brain is preventing making new memories in order to store away the recent ones.

Why suitcases rock and fall over

Puzzle solved

We’ve all been there, we’re in a rush to get to our gate at the airport and as we’re speeding to reach the check-in before the plane leaves without us, our overpacked suitcase starts rocking dangerously side to side, so we slow down in an attempt to calm this tiny beast.

Wrong. Scientists are now saying to speed up rather than slow down to avoid a suitcase toppling over, apparently it’s basic physics… as you speed up the suitcase has less room and time to swing side to side.  Another solution the scientists have put forward is to hold the suitcase as close to the ground as possible.

Alternatively, if you are not an olympic runner or a tiny person, you could just try to get to the airport on time – therefore avoiding the rush, rock, fall situation all together.

Singhsburys becomes Morrisinghs

Singhsbury’s has had to change it’s name after being threatened legally to Morrisinghs.

Sainsbury’s had threatened Jel Singh Nagra with court action if he hadn’t changed it when asked.

However, many of the people the West Allotment area of North Tyneside have said that they’lll still refer to his shop as “Singhsburys”

Jel, is not worried about the same legal ramifications from Morrisons, but won’t be surprised if he gets another legal notice.

Yet a Morrisons spokesman said:

“Mr Nagra and his customers obviously have good taste so we wish him well,”

Do you prefer Morrisinghs or Singhsburys?
