Memo about Apple leaks – Leaked.

3rd May 2018/in Gadgets / Tech/by billywright

Firstly, I’m getting more convinced we’re all living inside a movie each and every day. Apple, the huge tech company, prizes itself on secrecy and the mysterious allure it has! Apple like’s to keep things under wraps around it’s software and hardware each and every year. So they’re going to take a very hardline on anyone who breaks NDA’s. So those Apple leaks we get giddy about, someone, has put their job on the line to leak the information, hence why we always get blurry images and bit part information. Well turns out, that according to Bloomberg, Apple’s had 12 employees arrested over the course of the year for leaking information regarding future software plans. This was part of a memo which leaked.

Apple leaks: The Memo

In the memo, it stated that it had caught 29 people who had leaked info over the course of the last year. 12 of which were arrested. They were employees, contractrors and supply chain partners. So Apple has a job on it’s hand, to keep everyone in line when it comes to secrecy around their products. As there’s A LOT of people that are handling precious and important information on a day to day basis.

According to Bloomberg the memo read:

“Leakers do not simply lose their jobs at Apple….In some cases, they face jail time and massive fines for network intrusion and theft of trade secrets, both classified as federal crimes.”

Furthermore, the memo allegedly goes on to warn employees of any potential ‘friends’ that they may make from the media. Stating that the people aren’t your friends. They are just trying to get information out of them for their own benefit.

“While it may seem flattering to be approached, it’s important to remember that you’re getting played,”

Which reads like your telling you about a shady love interest. Apple are cool, even when you’re being warned about future work conduct!

With the release of Apple’s Homepod, we set out to find out the best smart speaker available to you today. However, we didn’t just want to know which speaker was the best in terms of features. We wanted to do know which one had the best personality! Can they give us the information we want, in the speed that we want it and in the way that doesn’t bore us?! We pitted them against one another. Check out the video above to learn more!

So, we took all 3 of the speakers from the big tech companies (Amazon, Apple, Google) and pitted Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant against one another. It was a fair test, we sat all three in front of us and asked them a range of questions. Each of them asked the same question, one after each other, to gauge the best response.

However, we weren’t just looking for if the speaker as actually able to answer the question. That’s just one part of the test. The main thing we’re looking for is, can the speaker answer our question with the most amount of information. While remaining concise?

Alexa Vs Siri Vs Google Home: Comedy

Furthermore we aren’t boring here at How To Kill An Hour, so we also decided to throw in some funny questions to see how much fun the AI’s can be on these smart speakers! Plus we asked some of the AI’s easter egg questions. Can you guess which ones they were?

Do you have a smart speaker? What’s your preference and why?! Let us know by getting in touch via our socials: @howtokillanhour across all social media platforms! (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram)

True Tone

iPhone True Tone Display

4th April 2018/in Gadgets / Tech/by billywright
True Tone is here on more Apple products! In the latest iPhones, Apple have got a feature on their display screens called True Tone. The tech was first introduced on the iPad Pro, however, it’s now found on the latest iPhones! (iPhone 8, 8Plus and X) The feature works like white balance compensating that your iPhone already has in the cameras flash. (The phone works out the right percentage, intensity and temperature of white light you need for a great photo) True Tone works just like that and will adjust the whites on your phones display to look different, depending on the light in the area that you’re using your phone in.

What’s the benefit of this? It makes reading a lot more comfortable on your eyes and will help to use and the phone when in sunlight.

Your phone is able to do this as the sensors that are in your phone measure a lot of things! The ambient light, colour and brightness of the light around you. Takes a reading and then adjusts accordingly to what it feels will produce the best white light, thus showing the right setting for your eyes.

True Tone: However……

While this sounds awesome enough, the feature does have to be enabled!

To enable True Tone on your iPhone/iPad:

  • Settings
  • Display and Brightness
  • Turn on True Tone

Bonus

Don’t forget to also turn on Night Shift!

Night Shift is located in the same settings as True Tone and the phone also adjusts your phones display when using this.

The iPhone will use it’s clock and geolocation to adjust the colours to a warmer colour. The display will get dimmer when using this setting at a later time at night, to reduce the amount of blue light emitted from your screen. Making a more orange type hue to the screen.

The reason for this? Making the display easier to read when late night reading. Apple are looking out for your eyes when scrolling through instagram late at night!

Siri

Apple looking to make Siri better!

4th April 2018/in Gadgets / Tech/by billywright

As we have discussed on the show previously, the most impressive AI helpers are those from Amazon and Google. With Alexa and Google Assistant respectively. However, if you may recall that it was Apple who first introduced us to an AI that can help you in your day to day lives. Siri, was the first out of the gate. Yet, she is lagging behind her rivals when it comes to intelligence. Both Alexa and Google Assisstant can recall a lot more information and specific information. Siri on the other hand, sometimes can’t even answer basic questions. Only answering what you want if you ask her something in a very specific manner. She’s just not as good as her counterparts. With the release of Homepod, the lack of intelligence in Siri is even more obvious. Yet it’s vitally important to get this correctly, now more than ever, because of Homepod’s battle with Alexa and Google Home. That’s not to say that Siri isn’t intelligent, she can answer questions, she just isn’t good enough.

Siri Hiring

So to battle this, the guys over at Thinknum have noticed that Apple have been on a Siri hiring spree. Hiring as much as 161 different positions to help improve Siri. There’s been a steady increase in Siri related job positions since the summer of 2016, however, there’s been a surge, since February of 2018. The positions are for engineers. Engineers that are geared towards helping Siri answer her weaknesses in answering simple general questions. Other positions that are available are for Siri’s Proactive Intelligence. This is basically Siri’s ability to anticipate the type of info that you may need. A further two other positions are for SiriKit developer framework and speech generation. While it may be some time before we see any improvement on a consumer level, this definitely shows Apple’s intent when it comes to AI.

Powerbeats 3

Powerbeats 3 – Your new Gym ear-phones?

8th February 2018/in Gadgets / Tech/by billywright

Powerbeats 3

We all love the gym. Correction. We all love to hate the gym. However, we all still go, some of us religiously, some of us sporadically. However, one thing that links us all is our love of music. Hitting the gym is great and all, but it’s nothing without your music. It’s the worst when we forget our earphones at home. No one likes the gym’s in house music. We think we have found your new favourite earphones. Plus their wireless. Let us tell you about the Powerbeats 3.

The Powerbeats 3 are the earphones to beat all earphones. They’re stylish for one and come in a range of colours. Such as:

Powerbeats 3 - Colours

Powerbeats 3 – Colours

  • Black
  • White
  • Flash Blue
  • Siren Red
  • Shock Yellow

They come with a handy wire tamer to hold the wire away from your body and neck. Therefore preventing from any potential dangerous tangles or flying out of your ears. We’re especially impressed by 12 hours of battery life. So for those who work out even up to 2 hours a day for 5 days a week will have 2 hours spare to listen to your favourite tracks.

Powerbeats 3 – Connectivity

Furthermore, connecting them to your phone is a piece of cake. Excuse the pun and resist the temptation! Simply turn on your Powerbeats 3 keep them close to your iPhone 7 or iPhone X and the phone will automatically recognise them. Click connect and you are done! As, this is all due to Apple’s X1 chipset which is found on the Beats X!

Most of all, if you’re running a little low on juice and you’re also running late to the gym. Charge the Powerbeats 3 up for 5mins and you get 2 hours of charge in these bad boys as well. With sweat and water resistance, an ability to take calls on them, there’s nothing to not like about these gym focused earphones!

Apple slows down iPhones

11th January 2018/in Gadgets / Tech/by marcusbronzy

In what wasn’t a surprise to anyone Apple slows down iPhones. Old iPhones specifically.

The reason that Apple disclosed to the public is because the batteries in old iphones are “less capable of delivering peak energy loads.”  If they let it run at full capacity it would run hotter and cause damage to other components to the phone. To help ease the anger from the public Apple launched a year long $29 in-store battery replacement service. This would bring your iPhone back to life.

What’s Affected?

  • Longer app launch times
  • Lower frame rates while scrolling
  • Backlight dimming (which can be overridden in Control Center)
  • Lower speaker volume by up to -3 decibels
  • Gradual frame-rate reductions in some apps
  • During the most extreme cases, the camera flash will be disabled as visible in the camera UI
  • Apps refreshing in background may require reloading upon launch

There are also a range of things that Apple’s throttling do not affect:

  • Cellular call quality and networking throughput performance
  • Captured photo and video quality
  • GPS performance
  • Location accuracy
  • Sensors like gyroscope, accelerometer, barometer
  • Apple Pay

(Business Insider)

Do I need to replace?

Apple are working on an app to show you the health of your battery.
But until then, (and before you go needlessly buying a battery you don’t need) it’s best to run a test.
Download Geekbench and test the processor speed. The result that follows will determine if you need to get a new battery. According to the folks over at Digital Trends a score 500 or less means that you require a new battery.

Below are the results of what you should be receiving. Prior to when slows down your phone.

  • iPhone 6/6 Plus — 1400
  • iPhone 6S/6S Plus — 2300
  • iPhone SE — 2400
  • iPhone 7/7 Plus — 3400
