(UPDATE) Drone Racing

16th February 2017/in Gadgets, Gadgets / Tech/by billywright

This is an old article from 30th March 2016. It includes a link to hear Marcus Bronzy chatting to James Trew of Engadget chatting about drones and much much more!

It’s boring being an adult, look at how cool these toys are!! Big boys and our drone racing, drone flying, drone everything toys!! These crazy people are racing drones now!

Skilled pilots fly quad-copter drones through real life courses at speeds up to 120mph. The drones are custom built for speed, agility, and performance & these crazy son’s of naughty words are real life pilots! Steering from the point of view of the drone by wearing First Person View (FPV) goggles that display a live image transmitted by an onboard camera.

Flying a drone competitively at high speed in FPV is an intense, immersive experience.

I don’t know about you but I want a go NOW!

Apple Drones Make Better Maps!

11th December 2016/in Gadgets / Tech, Technology/by billywright

According to Bloomberg, Apple are making their maps service better by creating a drone team that uses drones to better map your area (alongside the regular camera-equipped minivans) It is rumoured that the company plan to use drones from big players such as DJI and Aibotix to keep the maps up to date with construction of new roads and other information such as better traffic information or roadworks, to show that they mean business Apple hired someone away from Amazon’s highly publicised Amazon Prime Air service to run the team.

Alongside this, Apple is going even deeper into navigation, via indoors, they recently purchased an indoor company called Indoor.io and back in 2013 purchased WiFiSlam in 2013. Apple even quietly released an app called Indoor Survey which let you figure out your location from an indoor venue, even if it wasn’t mapped.

Although Google Maps is used far more widely than it’s own Map service, Apple are investing heavily in it, alongside using drones to improve it’s service, the technology company recently opened up its service to developers and incorporated third party extensions from services such as Uber and Open table directly into iOS10, which, reportedly, is the reason as to why Maps is now used three times as much as Google Maps on iOS.

Fleetlights

24th November 2016/in Gadgets / Tech, Technology/by billywright

Fleetlights is a new initiative from Direct Line aimed at giving light to some of the darkest and most dangerous places in England.

What Fleetlights basically is, is a fleet of drones with lights attached to them which follow you around via an app on your phone. The best use for this would be in places like Petworth which is home to one of the
most dangerous roads in the UK. Due to the lack of streetlights people cannot see where they are going or walking so with the use of Fleetlights they are able to get home safely.

Direct Line are preparing for a future version of insurance companies where they’re becoming much more preventative of accidents rather than dealing with accidents after they have happened and Fleetlights looks like an incredible way to start! A user can even set a group of drone’s to light their path rather than just illuminating above them via a way pointed path set by the user.

Please see the video below for more information regarding the Fleetlights technology!
