Netflix Promos (Ads?)

23rd August 2018/in Entertainment/by billywright

So Netflix Ads may be on their way! It seems that way anyway. For a while now Netflix have been playing trailers before and after some of their content. While some of these can be deemed promos, some of us may call them ads. Yet, those trailers have been skippable. While Gizmodo are reporting that they don’t show up that often. They’re reporting that if the latest round of testing gets approved the ads are going to be more noticeable.

Reports on Reddit are claiming that Netflix are indeed testing a new way of delivering ads to viewers. For example short trailers for Netflix Originals being shown between episodes. Are these Netflix ads or are they promos? It may be a bit harsh to call them ads. While we can see the benefit behind them. What’s better than seeing more top quality content that we wouldn’t have known existed otherwise?

Testing

Netflix confirmed the testing phase to Ars Technica:

“We are testing whether surfacing recommendations between episodes helps members discover stories they will enjoy faster.”

However, despite this Reddit users are claiming that the ads cannot be skipped. Netflix denied these claims and confirmed that they are entirely skippable. While the streaming giant also stressed that the ads are only for Netflix content and won’t open up third party ads. Makes sense seeing that Netflix is the place that people go to to get away from traditional content. Would be bad business if Netflix were to advertise things other than their own content.

Furthermore it’s not entirely clear how many people are seeing these ads, nor how long it will last, or if it will see the light of day for the rest of us. It does seem how much people engage with the ads to whether or not they get implemented. Therefore the more people clicking on these Netflix ads, the more likely it will be rolled out officially.

If you do see the ads, or if you don’t want to be apart of any new testing features that Netflix rolls out. You can opt out by heading over to this page.

Orange Is The New Black

Orange Is The New Black

1st August 2018/in Entertainment/by billywright

If you’ve been living under a rock for the past several years, here’s a little run down of what Orange Is The New Black is all about:

Orange Is The New Black is a comedy drama web based series created by Jenji Kohan for streaming powerhouse Netflix. The series is based on Piper Kerman’s Memoir of similar name (Orange Is The New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison). Within her memoir Kerman discusses her experiences at a minimum security federal prison: FCI Danbury.

Orange Is The New Black

The series revolves around Piper Chapman, a woman in her 30’s living in NYC. Chapman is sentenced to 15 months in Litchfield Penitentiary, a minimum security women’s federal prison. The prison is operated by Federal Department of Corrections a fictional version of the real life Federal Bureau of Prisons. This prison is later acquired by a private prison company called Management & Correction Corporation. Piper’s conviction is due to her role in drug smuggling. Carrying a suitcase rammed full of cash for her then girlfriend Alex Vause (a career international drug smuggler). The initial offence took place a decade prior to the start of the first series.

Since then Piper had long moved on from the criminal world and was living a quiet life among New York’s upper middle class citizens. Her arrest shook her world and those around her, her family, her relationship with her partner and her friends. In prison Piper is reunited with her former lover. It is discovered that Alex had named Piper in her trial which lead to Chapman’s arrest. Now in a world that is somewhat alien to her, Piper learns to survive prison and how to overcome a number of problems that she soon faces in prison. Consequently reexamining her relationship with her former flame.

Orange Is The New Black follows Chapman as she makes friends and enemies whist trying to get through her 15months. Episodes often feature flashbacks of significant events of the people that Chapman encounters. Helping to explain backstories or develop a character.

Social Commentary

Orange Is The New Black also has elements of social commentary. Highlighting how corruption, drug smuggling, funding cuts, overcrowding and guard brutality affect a prisoners health. As well as commenting on the prisons basic ability to fulfill fundamental responsibilities and ethical obligations. It is here where the acquisition of the prison comes to fruition. Due to poor housing and conditions Litchfield was on course to be shut down. The Director of Human Activities and warden, Joe Caputo, constantly conflicts with the business interests of MCC. Conseuqently affecting his relationship of many of the inmates and guards within Litchfield.

Netflix Movie Theatres

Netflix Movie Theatres??

3rd May 2018/in Entertainment/by billywright

Netflix Movie Theatres. Sounds cool right? Well, that may become a reality in the near future.  According to a report from the LA Times the streaming giant were in talks to acquire billionaire Mark Cuban’s Landmark Theatre chain. However, they backed out due to the cost. Yet all is not lost it seems. As a source from Variety claim that Netflix weren’t just interested in acquiring Landmark specifically. But are considering acquiring theatrical real estate.

Netflix Movie Theatres: Why?

Sources who have spoken to the Times are reporting that the reason Netflix are interested in purchasing theatrical real estate is due to wanting to earn the respect it deserves from major theatre chains and film establishments. But why? When the streaming giant already has the most paying subscribers than any other streaming service on the planet. (125M, compared to Amazon’s 100M) Owning a theatre would make it easier for Netflix to qualify for Hollywood awards like the Oscars.

Netflix Movie Theatres: The Oscars

As having a theatrical release is one of the stipulations that you require to be eligible for the prestigious award. Yet there are problems here too, as Netflix have always stuck to a day and date structure. Meaning that the films that Netflix have produced have always been available on streaming and on theatres. This is a major reason, according to Variety as to why many major theatre’s won’t carry a movie from Netflix unless it’s an exclusive deal. Hence the reason as to why Netflix are pushing for ‘Netflix Movie Theatres’. Netflix aren’t new to the Oscar’s space, as they won their first Oscar for Icarus this year, which simultaneously debuted in theatres and on Netflix.  While they are no stranger to this scene, having their own ‘Netflix Movie Theatres’ would make life so much easier for them to put their own movies in cinemas.

Maybe there’s life in the old dog yet if the new boy still wants to hang around with the old boy!

One Punch Man

One Punch Man: The greatest anime

12th April 2018/in Entertainment/by billywright

One Punch Man sounds exactly like it is, a guy who has incredible super powerful strength. This particular anime has a guy who, without suprise, has a super punch.

One Punch Man: Plot

The story of Saitama, a hero who is a hero just for fun & can defeat his enemies with a single punch.

That is as crazy as it is, the story follows Saitama through his journey as a superhero saving people around the world!  It’s not a super serious anime and is mainly just for fun. I mean with a title of “One Punch Man” who’d expect anything less?

EuropaCorp

Netflix purchasing Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp?

4th April 2018/in Entertainment/by billywright

Luc Besson he released a visually impressive film called Valerian last year. Releasing through his own film company, EuropaCorp. It is being touted as one of the most expensive independent movies ever made. However, on release the movie wasn’t well received by critics. Valerian didn’t show the same promise that the money that got put into it. As a result, according to Variety, EuropaCorps prospects of staying alive are dwindling.

Netflix, EuropaCorp Saviour?

However, there could be a lifeline in from Netflix. EuropaCorp are said to be in “advanced talks” according to reports gathered by Slash Film. Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp is one of Europe’s largest indie film studios. Founded in 1996 and has spawned many famous films. The thriller Taken is a EuropaCorp production, a favourite of many! The Sci-Fi film Lucy was well received by critics too, hitting 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. So EuropaCorp are no slouch when it comes to movies. However, the company is said to have taken on significant debt. Therefore have been downsizing American operations to return to French language films.

According to Slash Films reports the talks between the streaming giant and EuropaCorp began in January. With the intention of a multi picture deal being considered. However, Netflix are now said to be wanting the whole company and want a total acquisition of EuropaCorp. If the acquisition were to go ahead, Besson, would remain with the company as the central creative entity.

So, Netflix is serious about making movies. We may see Netflix either in the cinema. Taking on the cinema from people’s homes. Or both!

If this aquistion were to happen as scheduled in the summer. We’re very interested to see what Netflix can do with a movie studio under it’s wing. Netflix Originals have done very well on the platform and if they can replicate that success with films. That would be a very bold move from Netflix to Hollywood indeed.

Cloud Gaming

Xbox Cloud Gaming

28th March 2018/in Gadgets / Tech/by billywright

In what has seemingly sneaked under the radar. Microsoft recently announced that it’s launching a cloud gaming division. Marking out to the rest of the gaming industry that they’re entering the world of game streaming. They’re taking it seriously too.

The verge are reporting that it’s something that’s been building up for quite some time. Recently the huge computing giant acquired small gaming focused cloud companies. PlayFab who focus on game development in the cloud are now a Microsoft company. Will we see an Xbox that’s solely focused on cloud gaming?

Microsoft basically have something similar with Xbox Game Pass. Think Netflix but for gaming. However, instead of streaming the games you download them, keeping the license for x amount of months until you stop paying the £15 a month. There aren’t many good games on there at the moment, but that will soon change. Microsoft recently announced that alongside catalogued games, games like Sea Of Thieves, State of Decay 2 and Crackdown 3. All HUGE titles for Microsoft are being made available on their subscription service.

Cloud Gaming Direction

Consequently, Microsoft’s announcement almost proves that they want to move away from their users downloading their games to streaming them. As that was a major criticism of many users. Not enough up to date games available on the Game Pass. The two recent announcements could hint at the direction Microsoft are taking.

While OnLive a cloud game streaming service, failed. Other platforms game streaming is alive and kicking. Playstation Now From Sony allows users to play PS4 games on their PC’s and Nvidia has GeForce Now (Beta) Microsoft obviosly isn’t saying anything to anyone. However Kareem Choudhry Corporate VP of Xbox hints that they want users to play content on any device.

Annihilation

Annihilation Movie

28th March 2018/in Entertainment/by billywright

Annihilation is another Netflix great. This time, it’s a movie rather than a tv show, yet Netflix are proving once again, that streaming has a huge and profitable future.

Annihilation is a female led sci-fi film that is based on a book by Jeff VanderMeers best selling Southern Reach Trilogy. It’s written and directed by Alex Garland, who’s film credits include Ex Machina and 28 Days Later. The film stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, and Oscar Issac.

The film follows a group of military scientists who venture out into a mysterious quarantine zone. However, what they find there isn’t exactly what they expected and soon find themselves in a world full of mutilating landscapes and creatures.

Reception

The movie has no theatrical release and was released internationally through Netflix on March 12th 2018 However it still hit the cinemas in the US and Canada for a short theatrical release on February 23rd 2018. The rest of the world though saw the film on Netflix after Paramount sold the rights in December.  However that is not an indication of what the movie is like. Twitter are absolutely loving it:

Make no mistake, #Annihilation is a new sci-fi classic. Brilliant, thrilling, and provocative, it has as much metaphoric depth as it does narrative tension. I’m floored. pic.twitter.com/o2taDg2Z7L

— Drew Taylor (@DrewTailored) February 8, 2018

Just saw #Annihilation, and damn, it’s gorgeous. Beautifully done, riveting and smart. Going to need to process this one for a while, and I want to see it again! pic.twitter.com/rFl5cnacon

— Jenna Busch (@JennaBusch) February 8, 2018

#ANNIHILATION: This is the type of sci-if we always say we want to see. Bold, challenging, singular, visually dazzling. Would not be the least bit surprised to see it hailed as a masterpiece (and it might actually be one).

— Ben Pearson (@benpears) February 8, 2018

The film has also registered a high score with film critics. Hitting a 87% on the tomatometer on famous film critic website RottenTomatoes. With the websites critiques consensus giving Annihilation tonnes of praise for its visuals and ambitious yet impressive themes. However one thing of note was that this movie stays with you long after the end credits roll!
