Netflix Slow Growing?!

Netflix is growing slower than it expected in the first three months of of 2017, but Netflix insist that it is ‘gigantic’
Netflix added 4.95million new subscriptions in the first quarter of this year fewer than the 5.3million that they forecast.

The streaming giant blamed the House of Card series which debuted in the first quarter of 2016 and this years season has been pushed into Q2 as being the main reason for the slow growth.

It is still expected to add 8.15million new subs in total for the first half of 2017, a tad below the 8.42million it added during last years first half. They’re expected to reach 100million subscribers by this weekend.

Apple buying Disney?!

According to a story circulating the internet, Apple is weighing the option of buying Disney. For $200 billion.

“Recently, investors have increased their expectations that Apple could seriously consider acquiring Disney,” the report says.

Making it clear that Apple are open to “acquisitions of any size”

Disney, one of the few companies in the world that is as instantly recognizable and popular as Apple, makes for a compelling potential partner.

It would require federal help though:

Apple would need U.S. regulators to give it a “tax holiday” to repatriate offshore cash to fund an acquisition of Disney. Assuming Apple could obtain a 9% tax rate, it would effectively have access to cash of $223 billion.

Interesting.

Netflix Movie Studio!?

Netflix has been producing original content at a steady pace, both in the movie space and in the tv space. Whilst receiving praise from audiences and critics alike, prestige has eluded them. Deadline are reporting, in a power move to attract bigger names to the service, they have hired Scott Stuber, a HUGE hollywood movie producer.(Ted 2, Patriots Day, Kill The Messenger)

Netflix wants to be a movie studio and is going the right way about it. However, Bloomberg reports that Netflix has an uphill battle as many filmmakers develop their projects for the big screen and Netflix’s business plan of same day theatre/streaming release doesn’t sit well with theatres.

Can Netflix repeat its TV success on the big screen? We will have to wait and see.

Expensive Movie Rentals?!

It seems like there’s going to be a reduction from the time a movie is at the cinema to when it’s in your home….Warner Bros would be cool with people renting a movie 2 weeks after cinematic release as long as they pay a $50 fee. Fox are offering a 30-40 day turn around with a $30 price tag. Universal doesn’t have a price but has suggested 20 days before available to rent at home.

Variety reports that due to anti-trust laws, each studio has to come to an agreement with each theatre chain individually. Who are scared that people won’t come to the cinema if this happens, the demand is that the 90 day gap between cinema release and debut on Blu Ray stays as is for at least 5 years.

Netflix plan to give you no free time!

Soon there will be no other time but Netflix time.

It was only 5 years ago that Netflix launched it’s very first original series, Lilyhammer. Now Netflix boasts a ton of original content on it’s service. From shows, to movies to documentaries and comedy specials, Netflix has a back catalogue of a lot of original content. Netflix plan to deliver more than 1,000 hours worth of content in 2017 up from 600 hours last year.

How do they plan on giving you no time at all? Well by making it’s users accounts tailored to them, highlighting to them what they may enjoy based on what they have previously watched. Be that having something on as background noise when you’re working on something else, things that make you think or escape.

Netflix knows that you aren’t going to be spending too much time traipsing through their catalogue so they want to bring their content right infront of your eyes, so to speak. Netflix VP of Product Todd Yellin Explains:

“By the time they get to Netflix, we don’t want them to have to look through thousands of pieces of content and make a hard decision….We know the typical Netflix user is only going to look through 40 or 50 titles.”

Highlighting that Netflix aren’t going for a one show fits all model but rather spread to programming to fit everyone’s tastes.

This model has been heavily praised by many of the creators who have already worked with Netflix, it’s a model which drew Charlize Theron when trying to sell Girlboss as a television series. The amount of creative freedom while working with Netflix is what’s so appealing when compared to working on other projects.
