Audio How To Kill An Hour

Car buff or not, there’s something so exciting about buying a new car and investigating all of the technology that’s packed inside it, not to mention opening up the engine and seeing how powerful your new motor is. This is especially exciting when you’ve bought your car either outright or on finance through a company such as Motor Mill because you just know that the technology is going to blow your mind. However, when your car is a little outdated, the technology simply isn’t going to be as good. Luckily, there are a plethora of ways that you can turn your drab car into a fab technology-packed car! Check it out!

Speaker system

There’s something so exhilarating about turning up the radio station and belting out your favourite tunes, especially on a long journey. However, many older cars don’t come with speakers that can handle loud volumes, thus sacrificing your listening quality. Why not install a speaker system into your car so that you can enjoy music, whether it’s a quick trip to the store or a long road trip, your journeys will be much more enjoyable! Your local car part retailer will stock speaker systems, and may be able to install them for you for a small fee!

No aux cable? No problem!

One of the biggest problems with older cars is not being able to plug in your own music and enjoy some advert-free listening and most importantly, be able to pick all of the songs you listen to. The easiest way of doing this is through an auxiliary cable, but if your car doesn’t cater to think, what’s the solution? If your car has a cigarette lighter (and let’s face it, most cars do), then you can simply buy an FM transmitter for your car, match it with an unused radio station, and you’ll be able to plug your phone into the transmitter either via aux cable or Bluetooth! They’re super cheap to buy and last for many years!

Driver safety and protecting your no claims

Being safe on the road is imperative, and so is building up your no claims. As you’re aware, the more years you have without claiming on your car insurance policy, the cheaper it’s going to be with each renewal. However, no matter how safely you drive there’s one thing you can’t count on – other drivers! One thing you learn quickly when you start driving is that the only person you can trust on the road is yourself. Do yourself a favour and buy a dash and rear camera for your car so that if you’re ever in an incident, you can prove that you were driving safely. This can also help bring the cost of your insurance down too, so it’s a win-win situation!

Footwell lighting

Finally, technology doesn’t always have to do something spectacular to impress, it simply needs to look good! Why not jazz up the interior of your car with some LED footwell lighting? Many taxi services do this to entertain and invite customers back time and time again, and it’s a great way of turning your motor from drab to fab.

Keeping Your 4WD In Tip-Top Shape

If you’re the proud owner (or proud owner to be) of a 4WD, then you’ll likely know that these beauties generally aren’t so cheap to own or to purchase in the first place. With this in mind, it’s practical to make the best efforts you can at maintaining your four-wheeled pride and joy. Of course, you’ll want to get the most use out of it that you can, for all those adventures off-road and otherwise. Here are a few things you may want to consider to get the best out of your purchase.

Remember your pre-start checks

Underestimating the importance of pre-start checks can be quite the error when it comes to the 4WD; it’s about spotting those little issues before they turn into big ones. Ensure you take a good look over your vehicle to find any signs of damage; this could be your lights, mirrors, wheels or tyres- check it all. Also, make sure that you inspect each tyre carefully for inflation, it’s handy to always have a tyre pressure gauge close by. While you down there, take a look at the wheels so you can find out if the wheel nuts are properly secure (and make sure that you haven’t lost any)!

After this, you can open up the bonnet and make sure all is well with the engine bay. If you’re not clued up on where (and what) everything is inside your car then grab your owners manual to help you to see what’s what. You’ll want to see if the windscreen fluid and the coolant is full plus the clutch and brake fluid. Have a look at your engine oil levels and the tension of your belts to ensure all is good here. Don’t forget to inspect underneath your vehicle for any signs of leaks too.

Tyre pressure is key

It’s important not to overlook the quantity of air that you run in your 4WD tyres. This is because if you are using incorrect tyre pressure, this means that your tyres are going to wear much faster (and we don’t want that)! You’re also going to wind up with poor traction if this is the case. The key is to pick the right pressure dependent on the different types of terrain that you are going to be driving on. If you are simply driving on the road then you can just follow the recommended tyre pressures that can be found on your tyre placard (This should generally be between 32 and 38psi depending on your vehicle.)

If you are driving on sand, you will most likely have heard that you will need to drop the air pressure in your tyres- you can drop it to around to between 18 and 26psi. By lowering the pressure, you will be improving your flotation while also giving yourself momentum to stay on top and not get stuck! Sand can end up building up a lot of heat in your tyres so you might find that you need to give your vehicle a few driving breaks. If you are driving on rocks, you can also reduce your tyre pressure and ensure that you’re not going at too much of a speed.

Perhaps you find yourself driving through mud? In this case, if the foundation of the mud is quite firm then it’s okay to stick with higher air pressures, yet if it’s deep and sinking mud then low air pressures are a better bet! Although driving through mud can be frankly- a lot of fun, it’s actually pretty bad for your 4WD. This is because it gets stuck inside everything and is hard to get rid of! It can block your radiators and is also corrosive. (If you can resist- back away from the mud!)

Don’t skip on the service

You’ll know that getting your vehicle serviced is a must, yet not all services are the same, and you’ll want to find one that’s both quality and suited to your needs. If you have a look at your 4WD manual, you should be able to find the info you need that is going to help you to know which is the right kind of servicing and schedule for your vehicle. You can consider what your service interval is and go with that. However, you might want to think about more frequent services if you know that you have been working your 4WD pretty hard overall, driving on lots of challenging terrains or perhaps towing? You’ll want to know that your precious wheels are in good hands with your 4WD servicing so make sure that you choose a reputable source to give you the standards you need.

Upkeep on the differentials

Your differentials are the sets of gears that enable the wheels of your 4WD to operate at different speeds. The differentials aim engine power at the vehicle wheels and also act as the final gear reductions, slowing up the transmission speed once more before it meets the wheels. You need to make sure all of the different components of your differentials are lubricated to keep it in good working order. You can have a mechanic change your differential oil approximately every 30,000 to 60,000 miles.

Ditch the rust

Your 4WD adventures (though fun) may have already exposed your vehicle to some damage. If you find and apply a good rust prevention treatment that’s one less thing for you to worry about! You can use, for instance, underbody rust proofing sprays which can stop rust from forming to begin with. You could also choose to opt for electronic rust prevention. These work by using systems that aim to replace lost electrons in steel, with a negative charge, and thus decreasing the rate of corrosion.

Your servicing needs will depend on the type of 4WD vehicle you have and the type of driving you’re doing, so it’s just all about assessing what your needs are. While you’ll want to leisurely take those off-road jaunts and have a blast; it’s definitely worth your time to give your vehicle a little TLC!

THE NEW ADVANCED CONTROLLER

Slick Revolution.co.uk

The controller for the Flex E-Board is one of the best we’ve seen here at How To Kill An Hour, the controller is easy in the hand and has a great throttle wheel and trigger. It’s almost like there’s nothing there! You can control the breaking and speed modes on the controller too. Easy stuff! What we like the most about the controller is there’s an LCD Display helping to provide all the important information such as live speed and battery readings!

Are we ready for 5G? A look at 4G

While many of us are enjoying the speeds of 4G and soon to be 5G there is many parts of the UK that don’t even have access to 4G. If they do have access to 4G it’ll be incredibly slow too. Analysis that has been undertaken by comparemymobile.com, a mobile comparison and recycling website have revealed that Yorkshire and Humber have the lowest download speeds. However, it is still one of the best perfoming regions for 4G availability!

Their research has discovered that Yorkshire and Humber have an average 4G download speed of 20.28Mbps. Furthermore the region comes 3rd on the leaderboard for how often users can access 4G. With an availability rate of 86%. This is according to data reports by OpenSignal. While no regions, at present, even meet the recommended download speeds of 25Mbps for watching 4K content on Netflix!

Each regions averages are based on the 4 big network providers in the UK. That’s EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three. There has been some improvements in the download speed of 4G networks, as the North West of the UK has an average of 23.05Mpbs. Yet this is still below Netflix’s recommended speeds of 25Mbps for 4K viewing content.

Futhermore there’s been little improvement on the availability of 4G. 95% 4G mobile coverage target in the UK was set by the government for Ofcom by the end of 2022. The region closest to this target is 87.09% is London. While many rural communities struggle to get a good connection at home or at work.

Connectivity Quality

Please see a table below of the best/worst performing regions:

Best Performing Worst Performing
North West (23.05 Mbps) Northern Ireland (19.13 Mbps)
London (22.89 Mbps) Yorkshire and Humber (20.28 Mbps)
West Midlands (21.87 Mbps) South East (20.54 Mbps)

When looking at availability the best and worst performing regions are:

Best Performing Worst Performing
London (87.09%) South West (79.06%)
North East (86.99%) Wales (80.17%)
Yorkshire and Humber (86.01%) Eastern (81.42%)

Availability wise,Yorkshire and Humber are doing really well. Yet they sit at the bottom of the table for download speeds. Which indicates there is a long way to go before everyone can get the best connection available.

Now 5G on the way

With plans to roll out 5G later this year, it’s unsurprising that many rural areas are growing frustrated at the lack of 4G signal in their area, let alone the promise of a faster network. Despite this, the UK does remain one of the leading countries in the world for 4G adoption. This is largely due to there being such fierce competition between the four big network providers, EE, O2, Three and Vodafone as well as heavy private investment.

However, there is still a long way to go to ensure that people in rural areas have good access to 4G networks, both in terms of high download speeds and availability. Ofcom’s plans to sell new mobile airwaves in 2020, with coverage obligations attached in its bid to achieve 95% 4G coverage in the UK by 2022 is promising, but it does mean that those with little or no coverage still have a while to wait until they have reliable 4G network access.” Rob Baillie, Mobile Expert at Compare My Mobile

New Mac Pro

The NEW Mac Pro – Apple gives us what we want!

The Mac Pro has finally arrived and despite the mammoth computing company getting a roasting online for it’s cheese grater look. It’s the insides that make all the difference. It’s the Mac Pro we’ve all been waiting for. The interior is structured for modularity, designed to be upgraded any time a consumer wants. Bringing with it huge flexibility in terms of how much power a consumer wants and needs at the time of purchase. While still being able to upgrade if they needed to going forward.

28 Cores. That’s what the Mac Pro will be capable of. 28cores of new Intel Xeon Processors. It’s going to be powered by 300W and heavy duty cooling. Therefore allowing it to be fun to it’s fullest capabilities at all times, without the worry of it over heating. Not too sure if I’d want to do that for too long though! Maximum RAM is a HUGE one and something that we are very very impressed by, it’s a number we didn’t even think was possible too! So, what is it? 1.5TB of RAM. Yes you read that correctly. 1.5 TERABYTES! It’s able to do this with six-channel memory across 12 DIMM slots.

Furthermore there are 8 PCI Express slots, while 4 of them are double wide to allow larger expansion cards. Other connectivity features are 2 USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 slots. There are also 2 USB-A slots on the rear and 2 USB C /Thunderbolt 3 slots on the top of the machine.

While that’s not all either! Apple are launching a custom expansion module. They’re calling it an MPX Module. So, you connect it via a dedicated Thunderbolt 3 slot, which Apple have built into the motherboard. Consequently this delivers additional power and high spped connectivity to components.

So what is a MPX Module?

The MPX Module is a giant quad-wide PCIe card which houses 2 graphics cards. It has it’s own dedicated heat sink and has a custom Thunderbolt connector to hook into the computer. So, this isn’t some ProSumer device. This device is built for your production houses, but it pays to dream! Don’t believe us? Well Apple will also sell an optional “Afterburner” dedicated video editing card. This video editing card uses FPGA to process up to 6billion pixels per second. Again. This device is a beast.

The power supply maxes out at 1.4kw. There’s 3 large fans at the front which sit behind an aluminium grille. This will provide air to the components and the sysyem at a rate of 300cubic feet per minute. Worried it is going to sound like it’s going to take off? Apple says the device remains quiet. Impressive.

Apple also sell the Mac Pro with optional wheels, if you want to move it easily.

Releasing this autumn it comes with a hefty price tag. $5,999. That’s a base line. So the maxed out device could be astronomical! Base model is a 32GB of memory, an octa-core Intel Xeon CPU, Radeon Pro 580X graphics card and 256GB SSD.

Apple also announced a high grade monitor too, a 32-inch 6K Pro Display XDR, which is priced at $4999. It comes without a stand though, which is priced at $999.

So taking all that into account. We can but dream about these devices. Production Houses, you’re being spoilt. They look sooooo goood!

Volt Bikes

Volt’s Slogan is “The Best Electric Bikes” and we’re inclined to believe them! We’ve been testing a couple of Volt electric bikes this week and we’re pleasantly surprised!

They strive to be the best on the market whilst also advancing the boundaries of e-bike technology and we’re certain that they’re well on their way to achieving their goal if our tests are anything to go by!

Each of our bikes and the bikes available come with a speedometer, front and rear lights, Shimano gears, kickstand, pannier rack and mudgards. They even came with an inbuilt lock which we thought worked really well. It’s solid metal and never leaves the bike. No longer can you forget to buy a lock! The locking system is incredible too! Firstly the locking system locks around the wheel then a chain, loops around itself and securely connects to the lock itself. No one is getting into that!

Spintech

The Spintech drive system is able to harness the best features of both hub and mid-drive e-bike systems which deliver a system which is very responsive and a lot smoother than most. The system will only release power when you need it the most or when you are telling it too!

Motor

Each bike comes equipped with a 250 watt Spintech Motor, which ensures no resistance as you switch between assisted and non assisted riding. The bikes can go at either ‘Normal’ which is no electricity at all, low, and high. Which differentiate how much power the motor is giving you, thus affecting how fast you can go on the bikes. With some of them going as fast as 15mph!

The lightweight and durable motors were tested by Volt at 30,000 miles and they are still going strong! The motor is maintenance free as well as being silent too!

LCD Display

The LCD display offers clear visualisation of various information such as power setting, speed and distance. Not forgetting charge either! Each of the settings also monitor your riding style too. You can even see real time effort vs the bikes assistance! On some bikes there’s even a little lever which offers a quick head start boost to help you along the way.

Battery

The Spintech Battery management system is powered by 96V of Panasonic power. Volts largest battery gives riders a total of 95miles! While the standard and large batteries give distances of 60-80miles on a single charge respectively. The Spintech Battery Management System also is able to distribute power effectively between bike and rider. Therefore making a much more natural ride. The system is so intelligent it is able to distribute power whilst make best use of it as it will monitor how it’s rider is using the bike and adjust accordingly.

Volt: Metro

We tested the Metro, which is a folding electric bike which is perfect for commuters! Whether that be on the train or scooting around town we found it very easy to use! Whilst it may be a little bit big for the underground (though you can use it in the underground, folded, not open, we don’t encourage using the bike in the actual underground, fold it up first!). It’s perfect for the overground. However, the bike is so powerful, we’re doubtful that you’d even want to take this bike in the underground anyway!

The Bike has one of the easiest folding systems we’ve even seen and you’ll be folded up and dragging the bike along in no time at all! A simple flick and clip system is all it take to fold the bike. No more difficult levers!

The bike has an 8 speed gear settting, 16″ aluminium frame, weighs 18kg, wheel size of 20inch, can come in either a standard or large battery size (400kwh/400miles or 646kwh/60miles) and of course comes with a Spintech Motor.

Please see below a gallery of the bike we used!

Volt: Pulse

We also tested the Pulse bike, the flagship electric Bike from Volt. It comes equipped with the top of the range frame, a metallic finish and the latest electronic technology.

With this bike from Volt you can choose a 19″ frame with 26inch wheels or a 20.2″ frame with 28″ wheels. The standard battery will give you 400kwh/40miles of power and the large battery will give you 646kwh/60miles of power. It also comes with Shimano gears and brakes.

Please see below a gallery of the Pulse Bike below:

Volvo XC40

The Volvo XC40 is an award winning SUV, it’s small but BIG in technology. The Volvo XC40 has an impressive design and has storage in places you wouldn’t believe. Plus it has something we love here at How To Kill An Hour, smart technology.

Share you car

First up in this amazing car is the fact that you can share your car. Remotely. That’s right. Remotely. The XC40 has an innovative system that allows you, for a set time period, share your car remotely. This way you can allow a friend, a family member or a colleague access to your car. Wherever you are in the world and wherever your car is.

Easy Living

The Volvo XC40 is crammed full of tech and it’s designed to make your life a lot easier. Firstly the car has a 360 degree camera on it. It uses several cameras to create a view of the car as if it seen from above. Therefore allowingyou to clearly see where your vehicle is in relation to what’s around you.

While there is also wireless charging capabilities beneath the touch screen of the car. Allowing you access to your phone once you are parked and a place to charge your phone on your trip. Furthermore the XC40 has Apple CarPlay and Android auto. Allowing smartphone functionality on the centre touch screen. It even has Siri or Google Assistant.

Safe Tech

That’s not all the tech that’s inside the Volvo XC40 either. It has plenty of safety focused tech as well! It will act as your co-pilot so to speak. Helping you to avoid accidents and alert you if someone is about to crash into you.

Firstly, Crash Safety will monitor what is in front of you, it will identify a whole manner of things. Such as vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists even large animals. Warning you if a collision is imminent. If you don’t react in time, the car will even brake for you!

If there is crossing traffic when you reverse out of a space, the Cross Traffic Alert System will give you audible warnings. From the left or right side of the car and by displaying graphics on the centre display.

Plus Pilot Assist, with adaptive cruise control will help give you gentle steering support to keep you in the centre of lanes, at a set speed or distance from the vehicles in front.

Always Connected

You are always connected to your car with the companion app. You are able to find out where you are parked, control the cabin temperatures temperature. Furthermore you can lock and unlock remotely! Plus if you were to be involved in an accident a Volvo On Call operator will automatically contact you to help.

What is very impressive is once you get into the car in the morning, the car is heated or cooled depending on the ambient temperature. The car will tell you how much fuel you’ve got in correlation to how far it will take you, so no more guessing!

Where available, In Car delivery allows online shops to deliver to the boot of your car where it’s parked too!

Non-Tech impressive features

The Volvo XC40 has a gorgeous, beautiful panoramic windscreen allowing you to enjoy the view and the sunshine whilst driving. Plus the design of the car is just something to behold! The inside is made from 100% sustainable materials and has Harmon Kardon premier sound, sound systems installed.

Storage space is what sets this SUV apart. It has storage space in the door which will hold a laptop and 3 large water bottles. Under the centre armrest there’s an area for your things of course, but it also comes with a handy little bin. Plus if you like a takeaway there’s a hook on the glove compartment to hold it! The luggage compartment even features a folding floor which is lockable and allows for much more space to carry things. Even fold the backrest with a simple touch of a button.

This compact SUV may be small but it definitely impressed us, the tech side of this car is very very good. We love everything about it. The most innovative and impressive is the fact that you can SHARE your car. How cool is that?!

Old Honda How To Kill An Hour

Turning An Old Banger Into A Tech-Lovers’ Dream Whip

Old Honda How To Kill An Hour

It’s easy to feel embarrassed about the car you drive, nowadays. Even vehicles which fall into the budget category have far more features at their disposal than those which were found just a few years before. When you have something which has been around for a couple of decades, though, this only gets worse, and can leave people feeling bad about their only mode of transport. To help you out with this, this post will be exploring some of the work which can be done to give your banger an edge against even techiest of cars.

Finding The Car

The first stage in this journey will involve finding the car you want to transform, unless you already have one. Companies like Foxhayes Car Sales have been in this business for a very long time, making them a good direction to go in for anyone working to get their hands on a secondhand car. It’s always worth reading reviews for both the dealership and the car model you’re considering before you buy.

Giving It A Brain

Modern cars will have more than one computer at the heart. These systems control anything from entertainment to braking and steering, but you won’t need all of that. Instead, a single computer should do the trick, and there are loads on the market which are designed to occupy your stereo slots. You may need to buy a fascia to replace this in your car, but this will be worth it to give yourself a touchscreen, sat nav, and a range of other features.

Letting It Speak

This next option is a bit of a double whammy. While most cars have decent speakers, it will be a good idea to swap these out, with most models having convenient kits and guides available online. Along with speakers, though, having a tool like Google Assistant can also be very helpful. This can either be handled through your phone or the computer itself, but this will require an internet connection.

Connectivity

Next up, it’s time to think about connectivity, and how you’re going to keep your digital life moving forwards in a stone-age vehicle. WiFi hotspots are a good place to start, with loads of cell phone companies offering data packages which will be perfect for your time on the road. Along with this, it will also be worth converting the car’s 12v lighter port into a couple of USB connections, as this will make it easier to charge your devices.

The Gift Of Sight

One of the key features found on a lot of modern cars are sensors. Being able to avoid collisions, making it easier to park, and offering security in the case of an accident are all great benefits, and all of them can come from installing a simple camera system into your car. It will take some work to do this, but this will be well worth it.

With all of this in mind, you should be feeling ready to take on the challenge of turning an old car into something worthy of a tech-lover’s dream.
