Lord of the Rings TV show

19th September 2019/in Entertainment/by billywright

Lord of the Rings fans UNITE! Amazon Studios has announced that the filming location for the upcoming Lord of the Rings prequel show. It will be in New Zealand, which is where all of the other films have been shot. So expect to see some rather familiar settings.

Showrunners and executive producers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay released the following statement on the decision:

As we searched for the location in which we could bring to life the primordial beauty of the Second Age of Middle-earth, we knew we needed to find somewhere majestic, with pristine coasts, forests, and mountains, that also is a home to world-class sets, studios, and highly skilled and experienced craftspeople and other staff. And we’re happy that we are now able to officially confirm New Zealand as our home for our series based on stories from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. We are grateful to the people and the government of New Zealand and especially Auckland for supporting us during this pre-production phase. The abundant measure of Kiwi hospitality with which they have welcomed us has already made us feel right at home, and we are looking forward to deepening our partnership in the years to come.

Lord of the Rings wouldn’t be Lord of the Rings without New Zealand would it?!

According to the press release “Pre-production has started, and production on the series will begin in Auckland in the coming months.”

Tinder Streaming?

19th September 2019/in Entertainment/by billywright

Tinder is said to be getting into the streaming world. How? Well it is setting it’s sights on helping you pair up with prospective dates through what you watch!

Reuters first reported Monday that Tinder’s parent company, Match Group have finished filming. What is it they’re filming? Well it is said to be a multi episode television series with an “apocalyptic” setting. While one source told Reuters that the series would involve romance, it is said that the romance storyline is a subplot.

However, Variety have also reported something similar, with an alleged six-episode series, choose your own adventure show. Revolved around the question “Who would you spend your last night alive with?”

Tinder Streaming: Content Offerings

Match Group, according to Reuters are wishing to expand it’s original content fofering and better engage it’s users. Variety, citing a source, are claiming that Tinder hopes to mine series selections to create algorithms that pair up users with one another.

Yet another insider close to the project said Tinder intends to create an algorithm based on how its users make decisions within the series, and then match them with romantic interests based on those choices. A Tinder user’s particular view on how a group of characters should spend the eve of the apocalypse will lead them to others with similar takes, the thinking goes, and then, perhaps, to an awkward first date in real life.

Variety continued to report that the series will stream from within the app. Swiping right or left will reveal the storyline further. It is said to launch in early October. Karena Evans, who has directed multiple music videos for Drake, reportedly shot the series. Which Reuters and Variety state the the show was filmed in Mexico City.

Free trial cancellations?

19th September 2019/in Gadgets / Tech/by billywright

Friend of the show and all round technological whizz, Joshua Browder is BACK! He is attempting to break the modern subscription based world. By offering to cancel free trial automatically for his users! How COOL is that!

No more having to remember when free trials end as this new app will do it for you! It’s called Free Trial Surfing and will use a rather clever method. It will issue users a false name and a virtual credit card number which is registered to the app developer.

They will then use this to manage the account, redirecting email addresses are available if required too. So basically you can enjoy the free trial for however long the trial is and then it will automatically die before a proper billing cycle kicks in.

It’s already available in the US. It hasn’t gone down too well with service providers and are allegedly trying to block the credit cards which are used by the service. Joshua Browder says that his banking services partner is fully on board with the project. While they are also up for the inevitable game of card number whack-a-mole that will most likely occur. However, don’t worry a UK version of the app is set to launch this week!

Teletext dies – Again.

19th September 2019/in Gadgets / Tech/by billywright

Teletext died a long while ago, it was the BBC’s Ceefax service and got nixed way back in 2012. It was at the same time as analogue tv got switched off. The BBC continued a similar service through the ‘red button’ it was a news service that brought you more information than what was displayed on screen. Most recently it has been used to show other feeds of matches at Wimbledon or provide alternate commentary.

However it will kill off the “Red Button” news service from next year.

“It’s always a difficult decision to reduce services, and we don’t take decisions like this lightly, but we have taken it because we have to balance the resources needed to maintain and develop this service with the need to update our systems to give people even better internet-based services.” BBC spokesperson

AR Artwork Installed In London

19th September 2019/in Gadgets / Tech/by billywright

Augemented Reality is taking the world by storm. Microsoft have Hololens and Apple are rumoured to be creating their own AR Headset. AR is live and readily available. So what best way to use AR other than Pokemon go? Some AR Artwork.

London based collective Frieze have launched, what may just be, the first augmented reality art exhibit. They have installed I guess you could say, a series of art sculptures in London’s Regent’s Park. All for visitors to enjoy and like through their smartphone screens.

The piece that is on show is by a South Korean artist called Koo Jeong A. It’s a series of floating ice slabs which hover in place. The artwork is said to be a comment on environmental concerns and have been built in AR by mixed reality art enabler Acure Art.

To view the artwork you will need the Acute Art App. (Linked below). The app is free so why not head down to Regent’s Park while the weather is still nice and get to see some rather cool artwork!

“I like the fact that we are introducing this object, this entity, into the most conventional and classical of environments – a royal park with statues.” Acute Art’s director Daniel Birnbaum

How To Best Avoid The Depreciation Of Your Motor

14th September 2019/in Lifestyle/by marcusbronzy

Depreciation is a sad word to hear for any car enthusiast. Unfortunately, when you buy a brand spanking new vehicle, it starts to depreciate at a crazy rate the minute that you get behind the wheel. In the first few years, it’s estimated that new cars can lose up to half their value. Never fear, all is not lost. There are a few things that you can do to combat the beast of depreciation!

Do your research first

So this one starts before you’ve actually bought the thing! If you do a little research, you’ll discover that some cars will depreciate slower than others. Choose wisely and your off to a good start. According to Auto Express magazine, some of the slowest depreciating cars include the Porsche Panamera, the Volkswagen California and the Porsche 717 Cayman.

How to reduce depreciation

To reduce the depreciation of your vehicle, it’s essential to consider the mileage that you are ramping up. While you won’t want to avoid driving too much; of course the higher mileage on your car, the less it will be worth. Consider that the average mileage is about 10,000 miles per year. To avoid a drop in value, you may want to stick to the average or below. As well as this, you’ll want to make sure that you get your car serviced as regularly as possible. The closer that you stick to your service schedule, the better.

It’s vital to repair any damage to the car as soon as possible. It’s a great idea to purchase a used car or a ‘nearly new’ car. Doing so means that the depreciation stages will have already occurred prior to your ownership. Although the value has previously reduced- you won’t be the one who has lost any cash! You also should perform regular maintenance checks of your vehicle. Whether your car is new or used, you’ll want to keep it in the best working order. If you’re looking to make a purchase, sites like Really Easy Car Credit offer lots of attractive and easy to access options.

Maintenance checks & upkeep

Check your tyres at least every couple of weeks. You need to ensure the correct pressure and check the spare tyre while you’re at it. Always make certain that your tread adheres to the correct legal measurements. Carry a wheel removing kit and a jack if your car has a spare wheel. You may also want to keep a locking wheel nut key with your tools. Keep an eye on your power steering; have the garage top up your hydraulic fluid on each service. You can also consistently check its levels yourself. Check over the bodywork often to look for signs of rust. You need to watch out for rust as it’s not just ` a cosmetic damage. When ignored over time, rust can cause corrosive damage to your car parts.

Depreciation is a pain, but buying a used car can take off the financial pressure. It’s also worth looking into the depreciation rates of each vehicle that you are considering. Overall, the better care you take of your car- the less you will be contributing to devaluing it!

Smartwatch and Regular Watches banned In Exams

11th September 2019/in Gadgets / Tech/by billywright

The UK are afraid of those pesky cheaters at school exams and are attempting to prevent cheating, by banning ALL watches. As it’s so hard to tell which is a smartwatch and what isn’t these days. How far tech has come.

An independent commission hired to investigate exam malpractice discovered that it’s just to difficult to tell the difference. Consequently resulting in a sweeping ban for all watches. Regular and the smartwatch. As it’s impractical to do a check on every students watches, just ban them all.

The Independent Commission on Examination Malpractice reports a “very low level of malpractice.” However it states that”a total ban on all types of watches, as well as other internet devices, removes any possibility of candidates having non-sanctioned internet access during exams.”

Schools in the US have already banned the smartwatch and regular watches from exam rooms. But the UK version is a recommendation for the UK’s Office of Qualifications and Exam Regulation. They said that it will work with the commission to implement it’s recommendations and will consider banning all watches from next summer.

The commission state that it’s due to the “sophistication of internet-enabled devices.” The commission are even going as far as monitoring the dark web for sale of exam papers and checking toilets to make sure students haven’t stashed their phones or notes in there.

Hey Siri, Get Me A Big Mac – Fast Food AI

11th September 2019/in Gadgets / Tech/by billywright

You will soon be able to ask an AI patron what burger you’d like at McDonalds. McDonalds have announced that they are buying the voice tech startup Apprente. Why? So they can automate their drive-thru menu. *cue old people moaning that it will cost jobs!* Fast Food AI is on the way!

The Mountain View based company specialise in buidling voice agents which can take orders in a variety of languages and accents. McDonalds have been testing the tech in a number of locations and they hope it will make for “faster, simpler and more accurate order taking” via it’s drive-thrus.

McD Tech Labs

Apprente will be a part of the McD Tech Labs. Which are a new restaurant tech group. The team will become the groups founding members and co-founder Itamar Arel will serve as it’s vice-president.

“McDonald’s commitment to innovation has long inspired our team. It was quite clear from our various engagements that McDonald’s is leading the industry with technology”

“Apprente was borne out of an opportunity to use technology to solve challenging real world problems and we’re thrilled to now apply this to creating personalized experiences for customers and crew.”

Itamar Arel, Ph.D, co-founder of Apprente and Vice President of McD Tech Labs.

There is potential to expand Apprente’s tech into other areas like mobile and kiosk ordering. McDonalds purchase of Apprente is it’s third of 2019. After it acquired Dynamic Yield earlier this year in April. A personalised data startup, which customises it’s drive-thru menus by the weather, time of day, restaurant traffic and trending menu items. They also bought a minority stake in Plexure a New Zealand mobile app tech company. Fast Food AI looks incredible helpful, though at the cost of some jobs, will it create more at other areas of the company?
