CLCKR Smartphone Stand

21st May 2020/in Gadgets / Tech/by billywright

We’ve been testing the CLCKR phone stand and it is really really good! It has made using our phone even easier, why? Well for us we’re people who love to consume content on the go, as well as at home. The CLCKR grip helps with this. As it provides a firmer and safer use of our smartphone. Not only that it looks really good too and doesn’t add any unnecessary bulk to the device.

It can be used on any device thanks to the 3M adhesive. While if you decide for whatever reason (we don’t know why you would!) want to take it off, it won’t leave any residue behind!

With CLCKR you can use it to;

  • Position your phone in portrait or landscape mode to video call with friends or family
  • Hold your phone comfortably and take brilliant selfies
  • Utilise the secure grip to make calls or use your phone on-the-go
  • Stand your phone up and use it as a second screen while working
  • Binge-watch your favourite films or TV shows hands-free

NHS Offering Cinema Tickets

31st August 2017/in Entertainment, Film /TV/by billywright

The NHS are tempting people to get healthier with the lure of free cinema tickets (and they are getting expensive) amongst other incentives such as discounts on shopping and fitness gear.

A user would use a mobile app to track exercise and encourage them to hit targets to earn the goodies, thus reducing pressure on the NHS.

The NHS is working with 10 new housing developments with the aim to put “great health at the heart of urban design and planning” the scheme is over several ideas by city planning researchers at Citiesmode for the Halton Lea Site in Cheshire. Even going as far as implementing public gym equipment, running tracks drawn on to the pavement, cooking lessons, free bikes and even an outdoor cinema.

It’s all very much a concept scheme at the moment, but we think that this idea sounds absolutely incredible! The final proposal and implementation strategy for the Halton Lea site is expected to be published in January 2018, so we’ll see how this unfolds!

WannaCry Hacker Arrested

9th August 2017/in Gadgets / Tech, Technology/by billywright

Marcus Hutchins a British Cyber-Security researcher will appear in court in Vegas, whilst attending the Black Hat and Def Con cyber security conferences, charged with his involvement with Kronos – malware which steals banking logins from infected computers.

Hutchins stopped the WannaCry Cyber-Attack which hit the NHS in May and the FBI arrested him on Wednesday, with the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre were surprised at his arrest.

The US Department of Justice released a statement on his arrest stating that:

“Marcus Hutchins… a citizen and resident of the United Kingdom, was arrested in the United States on 2 August, 2017, in Las Vegas, Nevada, after a grand jury in the Eastern District of Wisconsin returned a six-count indictment against Hutchins for his role in creating and distributing the Kronos banking Trojan….The charges against Hutchins, and for which he was arrested, relate to alleged conduct that occurred between in or around July 2014 and July 2015.”

It is alleged that Hitchins created and sold Kronos on the dark web, Jane Hutchins, Marcus’ mother said that it was ‘highly unlikely’ that her son was involved saying that he spent his time preventing attacks from occurring. With those who work with Hutchins coming to the defence feeling that the US justice system have made a “huge mistake” Digital rights groups have said they are “deeply concerned” by his arrest.

Cyber-attorney Tor Ekeland has said that Mr Hutchins could face “40 years in jail” if found guilty, even though the case states no victims. But is worried about the outcome of this case for legitimate programmes, speaking on Radio 4’s Today:

“I can think of a number of examples of legitimate software that would potentially be a felony under this theory of prosecution.”

Hutchins has been granted £23,000 bail and at the time of writing it is unknown if he was able to pay this. He left court unshackled but ordered to leave his hands behind his back.

His defence lawyer Ms Lobo told the BBC that he has pled not guilty and the federal indictment against him is “pretty flimsy, pretty slim compared to what we normally see in a US indictment”

It is claimed that he software was sold for $2,000 in digital currency in June 2015 and Dan Cowhig, prosecuting, told court room that Hutchins confessed during a police interview that he was the “author of Kronos malware and indicated that he sold it”

Google Deepmind extends Stream App to Musgrove Park

24th June 2017/in Gadgets / Tech, Technology/by billywright

Google’s DeepMind implemented it’s Streams health app to Musgrove Park Hospital in Somerset.

Streams helps medical professionals spot signs of kidney failure but was controversial when it rolled out at Royal Free Hospital in London. As it sought access to 1.6million patient records.

According to the BBC there is no opt-out for patients who don’t want to share their personal data, with DeepMind keen to reiterate that no data is shared with it’s parent firm.

DeepMind is Google’s AI arm and development of the app didn’t involve any AI, DeepMind has a health division and are keen to explore ways in which it can be used within the NHS

Streams has been seen in a positive light by medical professionals but questions raised if the NHS should’ve shared data with Google.

Musgrove Park Hospital plans to hold workshops/open days with both the staff and the public to see how the app works and refused to rule out if it could be used in the future to detect health conditions.

NHS uses UBER!

27th March 2017/in Gadgets / Tech, Technology/by billywright

Healthcare startup Cera, is teaming up with Uber to deliver patient care on the NHS’ behalf.

Launched in November this matchup will allow carers in the UK to get to the people who need them the most a lot easier. Cera announced recently a partnership with Barts Health NHS Trust. This company runs Mile End Hospital and Newham University Hospital amongst others. They will help not only carers to make their usual house visits, but also patients as they attend hospital appointments. By using this service the theory is that it will improve patient care and free up hospital beds.

Cera is also helping people remain independent by hailing an UberAssist, it will help with walkers and scooters, or an UberWAV a fully wheelchair accessible vehicle.

Uber is working Cera and not the NHS.

App as a Contraceptive?

18th February 2017/in Gadgets / Tech/by billywright

You can now use an app as a form of contraceptive. Yes you heard that correctly. AN APP.

The app known as ‘Natural Cycles’ monitors fertility via algorithms. The German Department of Health has approved this and now it can be prescribed in Europe and the UK like the pill or condoms. It uses a method similar to the ‘Rhythm” telling women how fertile they are and therefore when they can have sex with little risk of getting pregnant.

It costs £6.99 a month and currently had 10,000 UK users.

During ovulation high progesterone levels increase a woman’s body temperature by half a degree and users measure their temperature daily using the included electronic thermometer. On the app days marked as green are when unprotected sex is ok and if it is marked as red couples must use a condom or other contraceptive. If you were wondering the app also doubles as a way to show the optimal time to have a child!

Experts have cautioned that the app is not for everyone and that care must be taken when using it “Any device that monitors the menstrual cycle is fallible as women don’t always ovulate predictably,” Dr. Adam Balen told The Telegraph.

This method could lead to an increase in pregnancies as the NHS have highlighted that methods such as this results in 7 in 100 instead of one in 100 for techniques such as the pill, implant or condom.
