Lightline

29th May 2018/in Gadgets / Tech/by billywright

Ever almost been ran over when not checking the road whilst on your smartphone? Well for the clumsy and daredevils out there a pilot project in Bodegraven,Holland is trialing a system called +Lightlines which fit snuggly in between the cracks in the paving bricks of a pavement/road.

It’s basically a bright laser strip which is coloured either red (stop) or (green) so your candy crush marathon can continue whilst you do less important things like looking out for your life.

At the moment they are only covering one intersection near some schools, but they’ll become widely available if it catches on. It all seems kinda cool to us but the Dutch Road Safety organisation WN stating that these devices “reward bad behaviour”

Facebook Safey Check Permanently ‘ON’

30th August 2017/in Apps, Gadgets / Tech/by billywright

Facebook is turning on it’s safety feature, the ‘Safety Check Hub’ that allows friends and relatives on your Facebook know that you’re safe in times of danger, conflict and terrorist attacks. It should reach everyone within the next few weeks as Facebook starts rolling it out. It won’t be a prominent feature and you’ll have to dig into the list of Facebook’s secondary features to find it via for lines in the far right hand side of the screen.

Why this has been turned into a permanent feature is anybody’s guess, but a cynic could argue it’s the sign of the times we are living in today.

Cosmo Connected

13th June 2017/in Gadgets / Tech, Transport/by mollybpz

The Cosmo Connected is a detachable smart helmet accessory that combines a rear brake light and an app.

The brake light attaches to the back of the helmet, as the rider slows down, the Cosmo flashes a red light.

Having the brake light at eye level for the person in the vehicle behind them, makes the experience for motorcyclists a lot more safer!

ADT MAIA

16th April 2017/in Gadgets, Gadgets / Tech/by billywright

Have you ever looked forward to leftovers at work only to find someone’s got there before you? Or come home to find your flatmates have finished all your milk, borrowed your toiletries or even helped themselves to your alcohol?

Well you’re not alone as new research from ADT reveals that one in four Brits have been the victim of ‘Petty Pilferers’.

So ADT has used its expertise to create MAIA. A limited edition concept: smart motion-activated camera alarms to stop Petty Pilferers in their tracks and identify who’s behind leftover looting.

This innovative concept design uses smart technology, sending a picture of the would-be pilferers to the owner’s phone as soon as they go near the alarmed item using motion-sensor technology. So you can catch the culprit with their hand literally in the cookie jar.

Apple’s interest in Self Driving Cars!

11th December 2016/in Future, Gadgets / Tech/by billywright

It’s technologies worst kept secret – Apple are planning to get into the world of driverless cars – this week it became concrete. Apple have sent a letter to the United States ‘National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’ and put forward in detail how excited they are about automation in the transportation field amongst others.

They want to address any ethical issues that they may encounter alongside any regulatory issues, to help the car industry further Apple are calling for companies to share crash data to improve safety but not at the risk or cost of privacy.

While it seems Apple are going to be investing heavily in the autonomous/driverless car industry it is not clear if the company are planning to make their own vehicles or they’re sticking to the software side, either way we’re very excited about an Apple car.

Mac Hack!

Well it looks like Pandoras Box can be opened! Nothing is sacred anymore!

Malware that holds you to ransom has successfully targeted Macs for the first time.

KeRangers Malware was hidden in a version of a BitTorrent Client Called Transmission – which has since had its developers’ certificate revoked. Which means infected software if downloaded prevents it from being installed if people downloaded it.

Mac’s have historically been locked down and since it is so secure been incredibly hard for hackers to write Malware code for it – and historically not many people had macs so weren’t targeted – but as macs get more popular that will soon change according to Greg Day, Palo Alto Networks’ chief security officer for Europe, the Middle East and Africa

So dont go downloading Walking Dead off of Bit Torrent, stream or buy that like everyone else!

Never Trust A Robot

I’d never thought I’d be saying this, but Will Smith was right all along. NEVER TRUST A ROBOT!

A test was carried out at the Georgia Institute of Technology, to see how we as humans trust robots with our safety in potentially life threatening situations.

30 unsupecting victims started out this test by following the slimeball evil robot, down a hallway and into a room, where they filled out a survey. All seems fairly harmless enough right? WRONG!

Then the kind folk at Georgia Institute set off a smoke alarm went off and simulated smoke filled the hall.

What was about to happen next is absolutely evil and revolting from the robot, it would then lead them through the smoke down a new path, and towards a door they’ve never seen before. It’s here where you think, nah this must be wrong, f*ck this robot, my iPhone always tells me I’m running out of storage when I’m not, not going to trust ol’ Timmy the Tin can here. Nope wrong again. The subjects followed the robot to their apparent deaths (not real deaths couldve been though if it were a real life situation)

Anyway, these dumb folk could have easily exited through the clearly marked path they originally came through. But no, they trusted their life in a machine. 26 of the test subjects ended up following Timmy, while two never left the room (the other two were kicked out of the study, for seeing how silly they are I guess.)
