Posted by How To Kill an Hour on Thursday, 18 June 2020

The Mavic Air 2 is another incredible drone from DJI. The sequel drone to 2018 Mavic Air, the Mavic Air 2 is the perfect drone for those looking for a little bit more content and power than the vlogger. While not wanting a powerhouse that a cinematographer would want. It sit’s right in that perfect sweet spot.

With an incredible battery life of 34 mins and the ability to go fast in speeds of up to 68kph in sport mode, this drone is a lot of fun! All this is achievable with the DJI Fly app, making creating your videos so easy. Furthermore the DJI Mimo app, allows you to edit on the fly, access manual settings, advanced functions, and intuitive templates to create professional compositions in seconds.

Video

The Mavic Air 2 is also one of the most portable drones that we’ve seen here at How To Kill An Hour. Which is very impressive considering all the advanced features that it has. Such as intelligent shooting functions that will produce some amazing image quality. Not just with photos but with video footage too. Recording in 4k in a smooth 60fps, the D-Cinelike flat colour profile also retains much more information for those looking to edit their footage in post. Furthermore the H.265 video codec allows you to record more information while using less storage. Even preserving dynamic range and detail. Not bad for a pro-sumer drone eh?

HDR

It get’s even better, the Mavic Air 2 will shoot in HDR video, thanks to a high performance Quad Bayer image sensor. 1 single frame will separate exposure levels in different areas, which will then capture both light and dark details. Then the images are layered together to create an amazing colourful, balanced picture with high dynamic range!

Photography

The Mavic Air 2 is also GREAT for photography. With the 1/2 inch CMOS Sensor, the Mavic Air 2 will capture impressive 48mp photos. It supports a high megapixel count which creates vivid detail. EVEN when you zoom right in. Furthermore SmartPhoto feature will recognise the scene that you’re in, HyperLight and HDR all in one mode. Which will create for one amazing image.

It works as such. The scene recognition will optimise the camera parameters for various scenes. It supports different ‘scenes’ such as sunset, skies, grass, snow and trees. Then the Hyperlight will optimise the photos that are taken in low light. Which will create less noise and enhance the clarity. While the HDR Panorama mode will create panoramic images that will give higher dynamic range and vivid accurate colours.

Focus Track

Focus Track will allow the user to create professional quality footage. At ease thanks to Active Track 3.0, Spotlight 2.0 and Point of Interest 3.0. Allowing you to think more creatively and worry less about the stability of your footage:

Spotlight 2.0

Fly freely while the camera remains locked on the subject.

ActiveTrack 3.0

With ActiveTrack 3.0 you are able to follow subjects and avoid obstacles, whilst creating super smooth visuals. The ActiveTrack technology has been updated with better pathfinding and a faster and more accurate prediction of lost subjects. The ActiveTrack technology will keep your subject in the centre of the frame. EVEN if it move’s behind a tree.

POI 3.0

POI 3.0 improves over POI 2.0, and has better recognition of flat surfaces. It can now dynamically track objects like people, cars, and boats.

8K Hyperlapse

We LOVE this feature. The Hyperlapse the Mavic Air is able to create are in 8K! You can create some stunning footage and without complex post processing! You are able to choose from Free, Circle, Course Lock, and Waypoint modes, select the shooting location, and the DJI Fly app will do the rest.

Quick Shots

This is also really cool! You can capture short cinematic video clips automatically with a feature called QuickShots. The Mavic Air 2 will plan and fly a complicated aerial route for a professional shot. All you have to do now is add music, filters and whatever you wish and then share to social media!

Flight Safety

Flying drones is fun, but safety has to be key. The OcuSync 2.0 has a video transmission of up to 10km, which is then beamed in 1080p directly from the drone’s camera. Allowing you to see clearly and enjoy more freedom for exploring.
The Mavic Air 2 also supports dual frequency of 2.4/5.8ghz communication. It will then automatically switch to the best channel with the lowest interference in real time. This will improve flight safety immensely as there is less interference and therefore less chance of crashes and dropped connections!
The Mavic Air 2 also has incredible Obstacle Avoidance. The drone will perceive it’s environment in three directions, forward, backward and downward. The auxiliary light improves visibility and provdies the extra layer of security
Forwards: Vision sensor accurate up to 22 meters
Backwards:Vision sensor accurate up to 23.6 meters
Downward:Vision sensor, infrared sensor. The auxiliary light assist with visual positioning, safe landing, and visibility in the air. It can be turned on and off manually.
Furthermore the Advanced Pilot Assistance System 3.0 utilises advanced mapping tech for smooth following and reliable obstacle avoidance in even the most complex of scenarios.

Accessories

We also love the newly designed remote! Your phone now sits at the top of the remote to give easy access to what you are seeing on screen and it’s a lot more comfortable! The battery life is also a massive 240 minutes! There’s also a range of ND filters available (16/64/256) which is helpful for adjusting things like shutter speed in extreme lighting conditions. Whilst the ND set 4/8/32 enables vivid images even with low ISO values.

Britain’s Biggest Bandwidth Hogs

So how has the UK spent lockdown? It seems as though Britain has hit the sofa to stream more content than ever before! Official figures from the ONS highlight how much bandwidth Britain has used in comparison to 2015.

The ONS Study found that the most popular activity was to stream video content. The survey determined that it took up 2 hours and 53 minutes each day. USwitch also discovered that the UK Broadband usage had increased by almost a third overall (29%). That’s A LOT of bandwidth usage!

However, a recent poll by YouGov discovered that 35% of broadband users in the UK have slower than normal speeds during lockdown! So the question is, how much bandwidth is the UK using and how is it affecting the quality of our connections?

Revealing the UK’s Top Broadband Issues

During the lockdown there has been an increase in the usage of UK broadband connections. Which will in effect take up a lot of bandwidth. 1 in 5 households (21%) have suffered with dropped connections. Including buffering or slow connections.

So therefore our friends over at USwitch took to Reddit to research:

  • What the most common complaints were when it comes to broadband connections

  • How often the UK searches Google for a solution to these issues

  • Where in the country suffers the most with internet problems

Technical complaints toppled the list of broadband issues that people had. While Broadband speed was the top issue affecting those in Norwich. Googling for a speedy solution more than anywhere else in the UK. Improving latency was the top issue in Cambridge. As they were fed up with having to wait for their connections to respond.

USwitch discovered a number of customer service related complaints such as Switch Broadband Provider and Cancel Broadband was the most prevalent in Glasgow!

Top 10 Bandwidth Hungry Apps Revealed

Bandwidth is a hot commodity and a lot of your apps take up a lot of it! Netflix even applied restrictions on streaming quality to reduce the amount of bandwidth used in order to help video run smoothly. USwitch discovered that Netflix used around 1GB of bandwidth data at standard definition, per hour!

Furthermore Google Stadia and NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW used LOADS of bandwidth! With Google Stadia raking in 4.5gb of bandwidth per hour!

What is cloud gaming and why does it use so much bandwidth?

Cloud gaming requires gamers to play games which are streamed via the cloud. This is done via a data centre which provides the computing power. Every single thing a gamer does is communicated between them and the data center. Therefore this is why so much bandwidth is required and used during play.

Where do the UK’s Biggest Bandwidth Users Live?

The study by USwitch discovered that Southampton was the location that saw the biggest surge in broadband usage. Jumping 49% to 44 hours 36mins a week during lockdown. While which area in the UK uses the most bandwidth hungry apps?

Our study named Southampton as the UK location experiencing the biggest surge in broadband use – jumping 49% to 44 hours and 36 minutes a week during lockdown, but which area in the UK is using the most bandwidth-hungry apps?

The UK’s Most Used Apps During Lockdown

The average household has 8 devices which connect to the internet. USwitch discovered how much bandwidth do our most used apps eat up per hour?

Revealed: The Winners and Losers of Lockdown Entertainment

Video Calls Winner — Zoom

Video calling has a had a HUGE surge in popularity. 2/3’s of consumers 68% have said that they used the tech since the lockdown began. With Zoom being the biggest app with the highest search increase in the UK.

Plus it only uses 0.54gb’s per hour. Making it one of the least bandwidth hungry video calling apps. With Google Hangouts using the most at 0.70gb’s

Films and Box Sets Winner — Hulu

Suprisingly Hulu is the most popular video streaming service. 49% of searches for it since the lockdown. While Hulu isn’t available in the UK yet, it seems many could still access the content. Apple TV was a close second with 44% of people tuning in. Suprisingly Disney+ and Netflix were much further down the list! As they only had a third more searches than usual.

Amazon Prime hits bottom spot with 0.1% increase in searches. Maybe this is because many of us have those services anyway? Or maybe we’ve watched everything and are looking for new sources.

Catch-up TV Winner — My5

My5 tops the list when it comes to streaming catch up tv! With 100% more people searching for the service than before lockdown. Coming in 2nd was All4 with 46% more searches and BBC iPlayer had 19% more.

Music Streaming Winner — Apple Music

Apple Music had a 40% more increase in searches. The streaming quality could have knocked Spotify off the top spot. Streaming Spotify has 0.04gbs of data per hour of usage. With Apple Music uses 1gb of data as it’s a higher standard.

Folding iPhone Exciting Concept!

Folding iPhone. The one rumour that just won’t go away. Noe the team over at #iOS beta news have created a rather cool concept. The Folding iPhone looks like a cross between a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip or the rebooted Motorola Razr.

In the video above we see the iPhone Flip, a handset that when folded out in phone form, has really thin bezels. The notch is gone and has replaced by a centre mounted pin-hole camera. The back has the usual tipped iPhone camera array.

The video also shows a backplate-mounted secodary screen.Which can display content, notifcations and messages when the phone is in clamshell mode.

The rumours of a folding iPhone and the hundreds of concepts as a result. Have come from a patent from Apple depicting a folding iPhone. Now you know as well as I do that not all patents get made. So who knows maybe Apple are planning a folding iPhone, maybe they’re not, they may just be testing the water. But whatever happens, we know that Apple tend to wait until the tech has been perfected before adding it into their smartphones.

(T3)

So I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Until then we can enjoy the plenty of concepts that are on the web today.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra New Phone Who Dis EP3

Facebook Blender

Facebook Blender – POWERFUL CHAT BOT

Facebook have launched a brand new chatbot. It’s called Facebook Blender and it is insanely powerful and very very humanlike. It’s able to demonstrate empathy, knowledge and personality.

Facebook Blender was trained by using available public domain conversations. The conversations that were analysed? 1.5billion different human exchanges. HUGE! In a surprising stat, 49% of people prefer to interact with the chatbot compared with another human!

However, artificial intelligence experts state that using a platform such as Reddit does come with drawbacks. As Facebook Blender would sometimes respond using foul and offensive language, while at other times it would make up facts.

Though researches hope that further models of Blender would address this. A Facebook spokesperson told the BBC:

“We believe that releasing models is essential to enable full, reliable insights into their capabilities,” a Facebook spokesperson said.

Artificial Intelligence expert Dave Coplin, chief executive of consultancy The Envisioners, said that Blender was a “step in the right direction,”

“The first is just how complex it is to replicate all of the nuances of a human attribute, like the ability to hold a conversation, a skill that most three-year-olds can master,”

“The second is around the relationship with the data used to train the model and the results generated by the model.

“As great a platform as Reddit is, training algorithms based on the conversations you find there is going to get you a lot of chaff amongst the wheat.”

Facebook also compared Blender’s performance with the latest version of Meena, Google’s version of a chatbot. It showed 2 sets of conversations, one made with Blender the other Meena. These conversations included different conversations such as movies or veganism. Facebook said that 67% of respondents thought Blender sounded more humanlike than Meena.

“We achieved this milestone through a new chatbot recipe that includes improved decoding techniques, novel blending of skills, and a model with 9.4 billion parameters, which is 3.6x more than the largest existing system.

“This is the first chatbot to blend a diverse set of conversational skills together in one system.”

“Building a truly intelligent dialogue agent that can chat like a human remains one of the largest open challenges in AI today.”

Netflix vs Disney

Netflix’s share price rose just a tad last week to make the 22year old company more valuable than Disney. While Disney has been around for almost a century. At it’s peak, Netflix’s market cap was close to touching $200BN! (data from Koyfin). Netflix Vs Disney is on!

However, those share prices have reversed slightly to see Disney retake it’s crown. Though, considering towards the end of 2019, Disney was worth almost 2x as much as Netflix. So it’s very surprising to see a shift in fortunes in a short space of time.

You could argue that it’s the coronavirus being the reason for this. Netflix recently announced that it had gained a massive 16M new subscribers over the last quarter. While Disney have had to close it’s parks and furlough thousands of workers. Even have had to push back film releases. Disney+ however seems to be doing well, even though it represents a tiny portion of Disney’s revenue’s and profits.

Netflix may come back on top, but that could all come down to how long lockdown is. Though, other platforms such as Quibi may want to take a piece of the pie….

Quibi

Launching a brand new streaming platform whilst everyone is at home during a global pandemic may be a good thing. However, for Quibi, a content provider designed for people on the go, who want a 10 minute episode whilst on the commute, it may be different.

Quibi is short for “Quick Bites” and they raised $2BN from investors before even having a single user. Therefore making it one of the msot funded startups pre-launch of all time. They’re trying to break the mold and be different, original and unique. The ability to watch your phone in landscape or portrait certainly highlights that as the content will dynamically adjust depending on how you watch.

Global Stats

Based on data from JustWatch, for 66 countries Netflix is the market leader in 61 of them. While Prime Video has the lead in Germany, Austria and India. Furthermore BluTV is leading in Turkey and iQiyi in China. (Note Netflix is unavailable in China)

Netflix vs Disney – Quibi Enters the fold

Quibi debuted at number 4 in the app store. But has since plummeted to outside the top 100.

Their socials aren’t great either 190K on Instagram is great, but there’s an account about an egg that has 6.7M and charts get 196K. So considering the funding, you’d expect more followers.

However, there is some good news. The apps ratings are great! More than half of the 2500 ratings are 5 stars and there’s little 1 star ratings.

UFO’s: The Pentagon Declassifies 3 videos

So well kinda knew it didn’t we? That UFO’s *could* exist. Well, the Pentagon have officially released 3 short videos showing ‘unidentified aerial phenomena’ that had previously been released by a private company.

While they haven’t been confirmed to be alien’s they are unidentified. So we’ll leave it up to you to make your mind on what they *could* be. The videos show unidentified flying objects rapidly moving while being recorded by infrared cameras. The pilots talking in the videos seem to be shocked and surprised at what they are seeing!

UFO’s Believablity

The Navy had acknowledged the veracity of the videos last year, September. While they’re releasing them now:
“in order to clear up any misconceptions by the public on whether or not the footage that has been circulating was real, or whether or not there is more to the videos,”
“After a thorough review, the department has determined that the authorized release of these unclassified videos does not reveal any sensitive capabilities or systems,”
“and does not impinge on any subsequent investigations of military air space incursions by unidentified aerial phenomena.”
Pentagon spokesperson Sue Gough.

Guidelines

There are formal guidelines for pilots working in the Navy, on how to report possible UFO’s.  The Navy videos were first released between Dec 2017 and March 2018. Via To The Stars Academy of Arts & Sciences. To The Stars Academy of Arts & Sciences is the company which was co-founded by Tom DeLonge, the former Blink 182 band member. The company studies information about .
In 2017, one of the pilots who saw the unidentified aerial phenomena in 2004, told CNN:
“As I got close to it … it rapidly accelerated to the south, and disappeared in less than two seconds,”
“This was extremely abrupt, like a ping pong ball, bouncing off a wall. It would hit and go the other way.”
Retired US Navy pilot David Fravor.

UFO’s Previous Studies

The Pentagon has previously studied recordings of UFO’s as part of a classified program, launched at the behest of former Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada. It launched in 2007 and ended in 2012, as there were higher priority areas that needed the funding. However, Luiz Elizondo, the former head of the classified program told CNN in 2017 that he personally believes that there’s enough evidence to prove that we are not alone.
“These aircraft — we’ll call them aircraft — are displaying characteristics that are not currently within the US inventory nor in any foreign inventory that we are aware of,”
Elizondo resigned from the Defence Department in 2017, in protest over the secrecy of the program and the internal opposition to funding it.

Dig Deeper

Senator Harry Reid Tweeted on Monday that he was glad that the Pentagon released the videos, however
“it only scratches the surface of research and materials available. The U.S. needs to take a serious, scientific look at this and any potential national security implications.”
Some members of Congress are still interested. With some senators receiving a classified briefing from Navy officials on UFO’s last summer.
“If pilots at Oceana or elsewhere are reporting flight hazards that interfere with training or put them at risk, then Senator Warner wants answers. It doesn’t matter if it’s weather balloons, little green men, or something else entirely — we can’t ask our pilots to put their lives at risk unnecessarily,”
Rachel Cohen, spokeswoman for Democratic Virginia Sen. Mark Warner, told CNN at the time.
