What to Expect from the iPhone 8

14th June 2017/in Gadgets, Gadgets / Tech/by mollybpz

The iPhone 8 is not released until September but details of the new features have been released by Apple CEO Tim Cook.

The new iPhone will move from an LCD screen to an OLED screen, which will mean vivid colours and darker blacks as every pixel is ‘turned on’.

Other features will include a smarter Siri, who will be able to translate English into Chinese, French, German, Italian and Spanish; the iPhone 8 will also have an Augmented Reality feature (ARKit).

Augmented reality was used in the Pokemon Go gaming app last year, but Apple’s ARkit uses the camera, the GPS details and the accelerometers built-in to the iPhone to make it’s AR more realistic.

Cosmo Connected

13th June 2017/in Gadgets / Tech, Transport/by mollybpz

The Cosmo Connected is a detachable smart helmet accessory that combines a rear brake light and an app.

The brake light attaches to the back of the helmet, as the rider slows down, the Cosmo flashes a red light.

Having the brake light at eye level for the person in the vehicle behind them, makes the experience for motorcyclists a lot more safer!

Smartwatch will tell you when you’re getting ill!

20th January 2017/in Gadgets, Gadgets / Tech/by billywright

That smartwatch on your wrist may have just got a little bit smarter – they’ll be able to tell you when you’re getting ill before you actually do, according to US scientists.

Researchers made an app called “Change of Heart” which tracked health data, such as your heart rate, then used 60 people to conduct a study for up to two years and found that the stats changed from the baseline, when they were falling ill.

These stats are very important as the researchers say that with this data they could potentially help to develop an app which will detect things such as type 2 diabetes and in the study the app detected very early signs of Lyme disease in one of the scientists behind the study.

As the devices are constantly measuring our vitals they can often give a quick up to date information and your doctor (we presume) would have access to these stats they could detect not only things like the common cold but the onset of diseases due to small undetectable changes in your physiology.

If this comes to fruition a combination of a smartwatch to detect the changes and a smartphone to act as a health dashboard could save plenty of lives in years to come!

Smartphone Car Problems

4th December 2016/in Gadgets / Tech, Technology/by billywright

US regulators want to limit what people can do with their phones whilst driving. Sounds good to us! The US’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have published their first safety guidleines regarding driver distraction which specifically target things that you connect to your car such as music players or better yet, smartphones.

The guidelines, which are part of a second phase of NHTSA proposals are for the cars console. These were back in 2013 and they suggested that you got to touch a button to call someone rather than dialling a number. Which sounds really safe to us!

At the heart of it it is all about making things ‘dumber’ and ‘easier’ to use while behind the wheel to reduce the amount of distractions that we have while driving. The NHTSA suggest a thing called “Driver Mode” which are like Apple’s CarPlay and the Android Auto. Where a selection of apps or tasks are easily attainable through easy to use big button interface. For example Drivers could see maps that are on their smartphone in short chunks of texts that can be easily read from a quick single eye glance from the road, but with more reliance on voice activated commands than physical touch.

Sounds good right. But the NHTSA’s “Drive Mode” system, wants to go one step futher and prevent certain features being used whilst driving. Which makes sense as you shouldn’t be manually entering text whilst driving or adjusting maps to see where you are. The NHTSA suggests that it would be better with their “Driver Mode” to do things through “Driver Mode” where the user wouldn’t have to turn it on and it is automatically switched on once you enter the car and it the car is in motion.

However all this sounds really cool and safe and would go a long way to prevent accidents, these guidelines are exactly that guidelines. Car makers don’t have to implement the technology into their cars. Not only that some tech doesn’t play well with others like Google Maps doesn’t work with CarPlay so a driver has to mount thier phone on the dash.

While it is important to  make our drives safer, it still requires users to use self will not to get distracted and it does seem quite nanny state like to control what we can and can’t do with the stuff we own when in certain situations.

Will there be ways to prevent us from having more and more accidents, only time will tell, but this seems like a cool way to do it.

It’s basically a really small and simple tripod, that is the first tripod that utilizes your phones charging port to safely mount the phone, it’s designed to go on to small surfaces, like a wall, a table or a window sill. The tri-pod can be designed to either stand a phone upright or fold up the legs and stabilize the phone to watch a film in landscape mode, it can also be used to shoot incredible timelapses like this as well!

There’s a bunch of functions that the two differing tripod options can do such as:

Oral Genius!

Again lads, calm down its not what you think (although that would be pretty sweet no?)

Oral B ( the MASSIVE toothbrush company) have made an even smarter toothbrush – Oral B Genius.

It has a location tracker (If I lose my brush I can find it!) , a timer (Bet I can brush my teeth faster than you!), a speed adjuster if you brush too hard or too softly, and it also includes an accelerometer to detect the angle and tilt of the brush.

That’s all very impressive but when coupled with a smartphone which is cradled on a mirror utilising the front facing camera it can detect where your teeth are and where the toothbrush is in relation to your gnashers

It is here where a 6 segment diagram highlights where you have brushed and where needs to be cleaned that much better,

It even has reports on how well you cleaned your teeth and set reminders to brush your tongue, so dont forget those achievements!
