Facebook Stories unlocks public sharing

Facebook has now added the ability to post stories…

…and make them public, meaning you do not have to be friends on facebook to be able to watch a person’s Facebook story.

It’s essentially a clone of snapchat and instagram stories but results have shown that there’s more interaction on people viewing your story rather than interacting with a post you have posted on your page.

Facebook has proudly shared the rapid traction of Instagram Stories, both of which have over 250 million daily users. That makes them bigger than Snapchat, which has 166 million daily users for its whole app.

Four of the best apps to help you save money

Even if you’re rubbish with money!

If you’re bad at saving then these 5 app could be the answer to your savings prayers – they might even help you out of your overdraft:

1.   Chip:

Chip has a clever algorithm that monitors how much money you can afford to save by Looking at your every-day spending over a week.

That amount is then automatically moved into a read-only savings account that you can access at a later date.

2.   Folio:

Folio is basically the opposite to Chip.

Rather than the app automatically move money over to a savings account, Folio aims to help teach a generation of people how to save.

3.   Quidco

This isn’t actually a savings app – instead it can help you save you money on essentials – and luxuries.

The app has a varied range of retailers – more than 4,300 in total – which offer cashback on a range of products and services from car insurance and phone tariffs to clothes and takeaways.

4.   Monzo

Monzo is a banking app that offers an entirely separate (contactless) bank card that can be topped up from your regular account.

The app provides instant balance updates every single time you make a purchase.

It also allows users to set up various spending budgets for groceries, transport, entertainment and other categories.

WhatsApp is introducing new features

Revoke a message in 5 minutes to delete it

WhatsApp is currently testing a feature that could help save you if you tend to type before you think!

It’s been rumoured for a while that the app was working on an ‘unsend’ feature, which means users can delete messages they have sent and then decided they didn’t want to send that message.

The only 2 rules are that the message must not be read by the person you sent it to and it has to be revoked within 5 minutes.

Unfortunately, on the other end of the spectrum it’s also rumoured that WhatsApp could soon start sharing users data with parent company FaceBook.

Snapchat GeoFilters DIY

If you have updated Snapchat since June 28th, you can make Snapchat Geo-Filters now, right from within the app!

For $5.99  you can add all kinds of things to your geo-filter, really simply too, a bit like adding stickers too Instagram story photos, once you go to make a geofilter, Snapchat will ask the occasion and you’ll be presented with various options such as a birthday or a wedding and gives you design options based on your choice.

Once your masterpiece is complete, select the location of when, where and how long your filter will exist for and once done you send it off to Snapchat to be approved, which usually takes one working day.

Facebook now offers help to find free WiFi for you wherever you are

Facebook is launching a new feature to help find free WiFi worldwide

Facebook has been in the testing phase for this new feature for the past 12 months, rolling it out only in certain countries on Apple devices to see how well it worked, but now they have confirmed that this feature will be available on both iOS and Android platforms.

This is a dream come true for those on low data packages or for the individuals who often find themselves without network.

To access this function you need to go to the ‘More’ tab in the mobile app and then click on ‘Find WiFi’.

Businesses in the area will need to opt in to make their WiFi available to the public through Facebook, but Facebook still dominates social media in terms of monthly users so it could be beneficial for the businesses who choose to opt in and provide this service.

Google’s new app makes it easy to save mobile data

New App ‘Triangle’ let’s you control data use

Google have developed a new app which lets you view and control the amount of data you use. The app ‘Triangle’ lets you monitor data usage and restrict apps from using your data even when your 3/4G is on.

This is a handy little app if you’re on a contract with limited data as some apps consume a lot more data than others but it’s also helpful as some apps will continue to drain your data if they are running in the background.

Another feature this app has is that you can allow certain apps access to your data for limited time periods from 10 to 30 minutes.

This app is only available in the Philippines for now as it’s still in it’s testing phase.

Periscope lets you buy and send Super Hearts that broadcasters can cash in

Periscope has a new revenue stream

Periscope (owned by Twitter) has a new way to attract the best new content and also help you make some money along the way – this week it launched it’s ‘Super Hearts’ feature which allows users in-app purchases to buy the Super Hearts.

The Super Hearts can be sent to the creators of the content through the comment reel and then they (the creators) can redeem these with Twitter on a monthly basis.

Twitter takes 30% of the revenue and the creator/user gets the remaining 70%.

This gifting process seems to be inspired by the trend in China where users buy digital roses or stickers to send to broadcasters – essentially an in-app tipping service!

This is only available in the US at the moment but Periscope hope to extend this to everyone soon.

Snapchat launches location sharing feature Snap Map

Snapchat’s next big feature wants to get you to meet up with friends in real life

‘Snap Map’ shares your current location – which appears to your friends on a map and updates when you open snapchat.

This feature was possible as snapchat secretly bought the map app ‘Zenly’ for between $250-$350 million.

The feature allows you to share your location with all your friends, a few friends or you can select ‘Ghost Mode’ which allows you to keep your location secret.

Alternatively location sharing is turned off by default.

To access Snap Map, pinch on the Snapchat home screen and then you can scroll around, seeing where your friends are! Tapping on their Bitmoji avatar opens their story or you can message them directly from here. Snapchat has an “ActionMoji” which is determined by your location and time of day!

You can see where Snaps are being sent to Snapchat for thier “Our Story” by the heat colours on the app, which could indicate events or activities that are underway.

Will this breathe new life into Snapchat and take it’s crown back from Instagram? Only time will tell.
